Wait, so a few news articles earlier it said iPhone 15 Pro will feature the same Sony IMX-803 image sensor. Now cameras are the biggest upgrade? Which is it?

The "star of the show" is all the improvements together for iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Other stars -
A new Watch Ultra.
A new Pencil.
News about the next AirPods Max...

Honestly, yawn. Last year I upgraded from a Xs to a 14 Pro (carrier trade-in), and I actually regretted it, and still do. I should have just replaced the battery and saved my money until the Xs was unsupported.
I've held on to my iPhone 7 with one battery swap two years ago. There's security updates that come through occasionally for iOS15, so no regrets. Most apps run fine, but battery life again is waning. Now... whether I jump first, or my wife with her XS jumps for the next iPhone with USB-C, I realized yesterday will require cable swaps in the car (Only one of two USB ports support Carplay), unless someone's created a USB-A dongle of some kind with both USB-C and lightning somewhere. Probably motivation to get both of us upgraded whenever that first switch happens.

Can we finally get rid of the camera bump? Jony Ive was very talented, but unlike Steve Jobs, Tim Cook could not reign-in Ive's worst tendencies (such as the camera bump, notch, rounded display edges, etc.).
Lately ive been thinking about what mobile device is jony ive currently using since he left apple tho.....

I don‘t buy that argument. USB C has been around for so long now that politicians are talking about it. If people don’t know what USB C is, they’ve been living under a rock the past 6-7 years, especially since iPads and MacBooks have been using USB C for a few years now.
Most of my acquaintances are “normals”, and most remain puzzled by the fact that lightning connectors and USB-C connectors are subtly different. And they certainly wouldn’t recognise the names of the ports. They know about “iPhone cables”, and they know that “USB” refers to that bigger connector that you and I call USB-A.

Once I can do all that without wearing ski goggles, maybe.

I have zero interest in virtual anything. When my phone goes in my pocket, or on my desk, I am disconnected and wish to stay that way. I don't watch movies or tv solo, so that is out. I don't game. I need my watch when I'm trail or road running, and I'm not doing that with a vision pro. The list goes on.

No argument for living in Vpro. That concept involves taking it off for "disconnected" time, setting it on that desk, etc. Given the rumored battery life, it's impossible to live in anyway unless someone is carrying a LOT of battery packs or some kind of multi-battery vest.

And Apple being Apple, they will still make all of the existing lines even if they were willing to offer virtual versions with Vpro on. So Watch for the trail could still be a physical thing someone owns. TVs will still be a common thing for group viewing (but sometimes someone wants to watch something else, so they go to the other room to watch on another TV solo). Etc.

Vpro doesn't require continuous wear just as MB doesn't require a continuous spot on our laps. Users will use it when they want and put it away when they don't. And many would be likely to mix and match all kinds of existing pieces even if Apple offered up to the entire lineup inside the device.

OP was longingly looking back to the original iPhone announcement... where seemingly 3 different new devices turned out to be one vs. this annual cycle of tweaks to slightly faster, slightly bigger screen, slightly better camera, etc. Vpro could put ALL Apple devices inside that one package if Apple was willing (and update the virtual lineup with software updates vs. having to build physical things in China, etc). I doubt they are willing for SOME reason... 💰💰💰... but if they did and 3-devices-in-one amazed us back then, all devices in one might have a similar "wow" for OP in 2024.

It’ll pick up people who are ’due’ an upgrade but it looks very marginal vs the 14 pro. id love all my gadgets on usb-c but is that worth it?

Haha, sure, and in the end the software overdoes it again with aggressive post-processing that you can only reduce by indirection.
couldn't agreed more mate. idk wtf people see on current iphone camera (14 pro line up for example) that takes horrible photos, that over sharping crap is bullS**t, i do miss my iphone 12 pro max A LOT because it had the best camera before Apple destroyed it with that HDR software crap.

It's useful but not worth forking out any amount of money for.

My 13 Pro should last me a few more years.

Exactly this, I won't replace my iPhone 13 Pro until a new amazing life changing feature appears. I already bought a new case and planning on replacing its battery in the next couple of months. Great phone with a great camera.

USB-C is nice for being a one cable thing but it's not a revolutionary feature, I have plenty of lightning or magsafe accessories for wherever I need to connect or charge.

I’ll probably upgrade from my 13 Pro Max. I like the idea of one port for all, but my two other household members probably won’t be on USB-C for a couple of years yet.

For those looking to get a 15 and trading in their existing iPhone. Will trade in values decrease immediately after the 12th Sept announcement?

i,e trade in iPhone before announcement or before launch without trade in value reducing?
If you can trade it now it’ll be worth more than a week later when they announce the newest generation.

Coming from a photographer: stacked sensor has nothing to do with improved dynamic range or capturing more light.
Stacked sensors have faster readout speed, meaning they have less rolling shutter. This was basically never an issue with smartphone cameras, so I'm not sure what benefit it can provide, maybe they will spin it up with some marketing terms. In order for them to capture more light they need to use a larger sensor, or a brighter lens there is no other way.
my friend, i'm glad you here: quick question: what do you think about the software aggressively over processing the photos? you as a photographer how do you handle this?

There is very little innovating to be done in this space. It is clear because this is the star of the show almost every year other than when they got rid of the home button and turned the notch into an island.
Turning the notch into a suppository was no evolution at all. It removes more vertical screen space than the notch!
It was the same when they made the notch narrower but taller. A complete nonsense!

Hmm, that's interesting as I am still with trusty XS but find the camera underwhelming. But this summer I forgot (!) to take my DSLR on family holiday so my son stepped in with 13mini and I was pleasantly surprised that it has offered a few decent enough shots to print as 6x4 keepsake photos.

You're less convinced?

These iPhone updates are getting lamer and lamer...
I wish apple did every 2 year for upgrades. I know they won't because you know money but these yearly updates are becoming less wow and OMG I need those. It's more like my battery is going and its getting slow or I need more storage so I'll upgrade.

It definitely warrants my interest, but I am certainly not upgrading from my iPhone 14 Pro. Unless the trade-in offer helps offset a good chunk of this expensive device. Let's see.

You can’t trade it for the 15 right now only the 14. You won’t be able to trade in your current phone for a 15 until the 15 pre-orders go live but at that time the value could be decreased so it’s a no-win situation

52mm FF-equivalent is one of the big limitations of my current iPhone 11 PM. To get 120 to 150 mm FF-equivalent in the Apple ecosystem will be huge and what I have been waiting for.

Hoping these milquetoast rumors aren’t true. If it’s to be the star of the show it has to beat the competition now, not the competition in 2018. The iPhone pro max camera system isn’t in the top five, they need to go beyond a 10x periscope lens, and greatly improve their sensors/lenses/processing. They still don’t have any kind of Astro mode, night mode is as simple as it gets and pretty “dumb”, and even in video the iPhone is losing to the Pixel.

Step it up Tim.
