Hey,

Am I the only one who thinks that this year’s iPhones will be called ‘12S’, not ‘13’, and that the next year’s iPhones might be called ‘15’ due it being 15 years since the launch of the first iPhone?

It would be nice to get back on track. iPhone 4 was the 4th Gen iPhone with the A4. Don’t know if it’s going to happen though.

I think the number 4 alone is quite unlucky in Chinese cultures, to the point where they dont label 4th floors in elevators they just have an "F" and to the gentleman's point above mine the iPhone 4 was a mind felid of Chinese superstition, so i doubt they will skip "4"

please remember that 9 is luckiest number to most of the ppl and no one knows where is Iphone 9 so be prepared to expect the unexpected from the Boss :D

but i feel iphone naming conventions are out of proportions since last few yrs. Hope they make it more simpler by saying iphone 2021 or simply iphone 15 from next year and continue with sequential order

I believe this year iPhones will be called iPhone 12S Incremental update).

Next year, iPhone 14.

I would love for Apple to just call it iPhone 2021… iPhone 2022 and so on…
I read somewhere (can't remember where now!) that a reasoning against the calling each new iPhone just iPhone would be that Apple couldn't differentiate between them. Especially as it keeps around older models for sale at a lower price point.

Though they could do what, I've now realised you're saying, is call it iPhone 2021 etc... But I bet their marketing department has vetoed the hell out of that. Samsung has made a success of it I guess by just using the last two digits (S21 etc.).

I would love for them to just call it iPhone with nothing following it but I can't see them doing it :(. I also thought with the X model they were going to stick with Roman numerals for the next 10 years (similar to how they set their Mac OS names) but they dropped that after two models. Imagine a iPhone XIV - that's badass haha

At first I thought this year would be a 12s, but rumours point to quite a few more than superficial design changes (device thickness, cameras, notch size and shape) so now I’m not sure. Don’t think they will skip 14 though.

Apple’s naming can be erratic, but they did go from 11 to 12 directly, which is why we’re just calling it iPhone 13 for now.

I’m not sure if they’ll skip 13. They didn’t skip iOS 13 or 14.

Or iOS 6 or iPhone 6. They don’t seem to be interested in tales about good or bad luck around numbers, thankfully.

Another part of the reason that I don’t think that the next year’s iPhones will be called ‘14’ is because that number is considered to be the worst/most unlucky number in Chinese culture…
In view of recent events, maybe China will change their most unlucky number to 2020.
