What do you think of the camera bump that the 15 Pro may have?

I'm not exactly involved in the iPhone community (don't own one) but... I saw a lot of backlash over the 9to5Mac leaks of the iPhone 15 Pro's camera bump, which xxray posted here:

and decided to make a poll with options based on what people said in the comments of that post. You are, of course, welcome to follow up on your vote or note anything else you like/dislike about it.

The reason I'm making a seperate post about the bump is because that was the main focus of the conversation, despite the leaks also showing other features such as slimmer bezels.

I don't understand the bump hate which is a lot of the responses on previous threads here. If we get better photo / video quality I am all for it. I don't see why a bump makes any difference in handling the phone and even if you are using it on a table. I mean if you want even better photo / video you need to purchase a whole new camera to deal with and lug around right?

I understand Samsung made camera module bump "disappear". I think maybe that will be the reality eventually for apple but I would take bump and better camera quality vs. no bump and less camera quality.

I have a silly suspicion... People who complain nonstop about the bump (how it is uncomfortable / cumbersome) are also people who own decorative yet uncomfortable furniture (you know, some obscure ugly chair or love seat that is strictly for "looks" but is horrible to sit on).

As one who is a source of camera bump 'hate', I will just point out that there was a time where the camera for the iPhone 5 was the big thing. And guess what Apple did with the camera for the iPhone 5? They made it flush with the casing. No bump.

I resisted buying the iPhone after the 5 until around early 2015. I still hate the camera bump and it's only gotten fuglier over the years. But I like iOS more than I hate the bump. Someone else also pointed out that, given the specs of the camera, it's not feasible at this time to make the camera flush. The technology is not there yet. Which I understand. Still doesn't make me like the camera bump.

I don't use cases and I'm not a pro photographer, or even someone who is remotely interested in taking pictures. A vast majority of my photos are of retail products on store shelves that are sent to my wife so she can choose what she wants me to get her. Most of the rest are screencaps.

If I'm going to do photos, I put down the phone and get a camera. So camera specs (and thus the justification for the camera bump) I don't care about.

You have a theory about furniture. Well, I have a theory about what all the people who are cool with the camera bump are going to think/say when Apple finally makes an iPhone that has the camera flush with the housing (again). And that is…nothing. That's right.

The moment Apple can make the camera bump flush again, no one who loved the camera bump is going to say a word about it. Why? Because the camera bump love is superficial. Those who love the bump justify it because it's not technically possible to make it flush right now. They love the camera specs more than the bump bothers them. But if you can improve the camera and make it flush with the housing, then there's no reason to justify that anymore. And so, the variety of reasons offered as to why those who do not love the camera bump should just accept the camera bump become moot.

None of those reasons are going to hold any water when Apple finally makes the camera bump flush with the housing. There will be absolute silence from them. One day this will happen.

Now, if you want to talk notch hate and dynamic island hate, those I don't understand - just like you don't understand camera bump hate. :)

Doesn't the SE retain the flush, tiny camera?

It does.

Which is one reason I believe that the camera bump is simply a design aesthetic that Apple has chosen. If they really wanted to, Apple could make the bump flush.

Of course, I've been told I'm wrong (in regards to it being possible)…but one day I will be right on that.

I prefer larger phones though, so I'm stuck with the camera bumps on my 6s+ and my 11 Pro Max.

The glass is a requirement, if they could make it flush they would but it’s not possible without making the whole phone thicker. You need a certain distance between sensor and lens, otherwise your going to end up with terrible photos.

Not the current SE, only the original SE had a flush camera lens.

Yeah, I notice now... it's definitely a smaller bump than the current one though. Resembles the iPad bump (excluding Pros) but smaller.

Good points. I agree with the end point of notch / dynamic island.
