Considering a new larger iPhone after years with the various SE versions. I'm considering the 16 Plus and comparing with the 17 Air as likely successor. I'm not thrilled with the rumored thin (flimsier) form, smaller battery, and single camera. The processor difference doesn't seem huge. Also potential price increases with tariffs, inflation, etc. Any thoughts?

With the Air being the replacement for the Plus model you can always wait to pickup a refurbished Plus model from Apple if you don't want the Air. I wouldn't get too hung up about tariffs, inflation, etc on a new device. The price is what it is, I only get upset when current devices change their MSRP under the veil of the political landscape.

Vietnam just a received a wonderful tariff letter, so who knows how that will affect future iPhone prices. Apple care eat the cost but who knows what investor pressure will have them continue eat the prices or pass some of it off.

Year over year the difference in any performance is miniscule. Heck 13 mini vs 16... I cannot tell a difference in daily use. Battery of course is the big difference. Buy it if you feel it's time and it fits your budget.

I bought my unlocked 16 on eBay, non-activated; it was open box looks 100% new. The warranty wasn't even active meaning its never been use, for $770 512gb model. Check out eBay there deals are to be had. And I bought AppleCare plus to extend coverage and rocking it w/o a case. I'm keeping this for 3-4 years like I had with my 13 mini.

Yeah, worth it. It's an excellent iPhone. Don't wait for the Air if you LOVE extra long battery life
Can suport that. I've had a Plus for three weeks now and couldn't be happier with he battery life. Given I don't game or watch a ton of videos on it, the battery life is near phenomenal. Don't fool yourself, it's powered by an A18 chip so it's fast.

Personally I don’t think the Plus models are worth it when the Pro Max adds considerable features for not much. If I was you I’d look into a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max as that will have Apple Intelligence as well as more camera features than the plus. On its own though the 16 Plus is a solid phone.

Maybe in USA but a Pro Max is 2000$ + in Canada and the Plus 1280$. So my choice was abvious to me. Don't need the bells and whistles of the Pro Max. I'm not the type who basks in having the max in everything. Like a F150 for shopping at Walmart a few blocks away or living in 4 storey home with dual garage when you're a family of three. I'd say time to assess one's real needs unless you have the means to pay for everything that is the biggest and the most expensive just for the fun of it. My "little" 10 cents.

It’s only $2000 plus if you add more storage and like I mentioned a refurbished 15 pro max is around the same price as the 16 plus. You get the more features for the same price. Obviously do whatever works best for you, I just think it makes more sense to get the better phone for the same price.

You forget one thing. New vs used. And you still compare prices in US. You could have asked how are the prices in Canada. Case closed. This discussion is sterile and I don't like it. Open mind you know. Live long in your country and prosper.

I lived in Canada for a while and yes, electronics are typically more expensive than the U.S. I think much of it has to do with the exchange rate for U.S. based products. Higher taxes too, but then more and better social services. Though I remember parity many years ago.

Though the Pro Max may be a better phone in terms of features (as Devyn89 mentioned), I don't think I'd need them. Just a larger, fully functional iPhone with the most recent processor and current standard features is fine. The 16 Plus would likely be it.

I think the thread conversation so far is a good one and helpful.

Vast majority of US bound iphones are made in India now. India started trade talks with US very early, so didn’t get a letter. Expected tariffs sound like they’ll be the lowest, but since there is no real strategy to the tariffs, who knows what’ll happen if Trump doesn’t like the deal his guys negotiate.

(Feel sorry for executives that have to plan import purchases these days)

Ya I’m sure Tim Cook is drying his tears with hundred dollar bill toilet paper.

Sir, I think too. But it seems like "Should go for the Pro Max" be the usual answer, the most frequent and unequivocal. As if an iPhone buyer wherever he is located has to buy a Pro Max whatever his needs, his finances and his tastes. Lets's say I'm a bit fed up with what appears to me like a pre-digested answer. I've become to see it as "if you're wise and intelligent and savvy, you will go for the Pro Max. Everything else is "under" and useless and cheap and moron. I watch enough Apple forums to think that is the case.

'for only $200-300 more' ($300 base model comparison strictly, $200 if 256gb plus against 256gb pro max base) you can get 16 pro max.

But the battery life isn't as good and it's heavier? And the three camera layout is boring as hell, it's why they're moving to some visor thing this year and new = good, I guess?

I like the retro tear drop.

Also, we're 7 weeks away from a new generation of iPhones. That couple hundred savings will be nice to put towards your next upgrade when you opt for it. IMO.

I just bought a new iPhone 16 Plus upgrading from my iPhone 12. It's been fantastic and I'm really enjoying the additional screen real estate. TBH the reason I pulled the plug now was the announcement of the Air.. that phone is not geared towards me. 1) I don't need the pro features 2) I need a big screen 3) I don't want to sacrifice #2 for a thin design and a smaller battery. I say do it!

That's exactly my thinking too. The Air as the 16 Plus replacement doesn't do it for me either. I just need a larger display but with the same features, functions, and capabilities of the standard 16 (or 17 if Apple had offered that). Glad it worked out well for you.

I can’t fathom why Apple did the 16e or will drop the 17 plus in favor of the single camera air, nor why they gave up the mini. I’m sure they do marketing studies, but it doesn’t seem to match my own gut feel or what I hear on the street!

From reading through this thread it seems like the 16 Plus would be a good phone for you. I had a 15 Plus and it was a really good phone, it was just too big for my hands otherwise I would still have it.

I dont think iPhone 16 plus is going to be more popular than any iPhone 17 variant, after all it's the least popular of the 4 models currently being sold and why its going away: because of lackluster sales on Plus line for years. The regular sells a lot being cheapest / carrier deals, and the Pro's carry the name.

However, I do think that there will be a subset of people looking for iP16+'s after the new ones release, given there is no 'great battery life lightest and cheap-ish for Apple world' option: it's either the Air for its novelty, or the Pro / Max which will command a much higher price and maybe continue to be a heavy model. And iPhone 17 regular is seeming like a re-brand of iPhone 16, a la iPhone 14 was to iPhone 13 with same SoC and different moniker.

I really like my 16 Plus.

I had a 7+ running iOS 10 back when it was the latest. My only truly quick upgrade, as I bought it in April 2017 after buying a 6s in September 2016. Battery life was exactly what I wanted, but sadly, the camera was broken and it had some weird hardware issue.

I’ve wanted a Plus ever since, and I finally got one as an upgrade from my amazing Xʀ on iOS 12. I needed the compatibility and after loving my broken 7+ I figured it was time to come back to the line.

I would prefer it over a rumoured Air, as a single camera and relatively poor battery life (at least in comparison) are not appealing to me anymore. If I were you, I’d make the same choice. I’d get the 16 Plus without hesitation.

Good advice and helpful background experience.
