iPhone 2.0 breaks in-car compatibility

This is pretty much a warning to anyone who uses their iPhone in their car. I personally had been using mine with a Sony CDXGT50UI head unit which I purchased specifically for its 30-pin iPod adapter.

However, since installing 2.0, the head unit can no longer control the iPhone whatsoever. It can't read any of the music from it at all.

I am extremely disappointed that this can be allowed to happen.

FYI 2.0 has had no effect whatsoever on functionality with my Alpine head unit. So I guess YMMV

I'm speaking about a head unit which only controls music. It's designed for iPod, but it worked with my iPhone until 2.0

I just plugged my iPhone 3g into my car last night for the first time. I have a scion xb with the factory iPod control option. It worked fine for every iPod I've had. For the iPhone 3g everything worked fine except it won't charge! It came up with a message on the iPhone saying that this iPod does not support charging off this accessory.... Wtf? I hope a firmware upgrade addresses that problem. =(

Has anyone tried using the 3G dock with a non-compatible stereo? Or a non-Apple dock? I have a Belkin dock that worked with my car stereo and the old iPhone, and a 3G dock on order, so if anyone is curious I can try those out later this week. I'll probably try the 3G dock anyway, because I'm looking for an easier mounting solution.

The Apple iPod universal dock does NOT work with my car stereo, gives an error on both the phone and the stereo. That may be due to the cable I'm using, because the dock works fine with my computer, although the cable in the house has a different connector.

Well I've just done some extensive testing and it isn't broken completely. However, I now have to select a song (any song) on my iPhone first and have it playing while I connect the dock cable for me to be able to control the phone and listen to the songs via the car stereo.

This is disappointing and really, why would Apple need to be messing around with this part of the firmware? It worked fine before.

Yeah, it broke on my system, too.

I have an older Alpine unit (2 or 3 years old) that used to say "UNSUPPORTED" when I hooked up my original iPhone, but nonetheless worked as soon as I turned the dial to select a playlist. Now, with iPhone 2.0 software, it says "SEARCHING" and never finds the iPhone.

I have not tried your tip, yet (playing a song first, then hooking up the connector).

neiltc13 and bikertwin, have you upgraded your phones to firmware 5A347? The new phones shipped with 345, and while my car stereo has always worked with the 3G, it works better now that I updated to 347.

If you haven't updated yet, make sure you back up your phone, the click "Restore" in iTunes. Apparently checking for update won't get the new version, but restoring will. The process will take quite some time, but when it's done you should be able to restore your phone from the backup you made, so you don't lose anything.

My non-Apple car dock still works with my iPhone 3G now too, but every time i mount it, my iPhone says, the unable to charge device due to compatibility with this accessory. It also asks if I want to turn it into airplane mode so there is no radio interruption.

I just say no and it works just the same. Sometimes I get strange blips of frequency sound, mostly when I'm around certain traffic lights.

Thanks, but I have the original iPhone with the 2.0 software, not the iPhone 3G.

I tested the tip about playing a song before hooking up the connector. The first time I tried it, it just displayed "NO FILE". But I tried again and it seemed to work. I could even skip songs.

Who wants to pay another $100 for another adapter every time a new model or software upgrade comes out? Not me. I'm gonna stick to the headphone jack for audio input from now on. It's just as well, as choosing playlists directly on the iPhone is a hell of a lot quicker and more graphical than using the stupid car stereo's interface. Apple can put this companies out of business very quickly by just coming out with a car stereo amplifier, and just using the iPhone/iPod as the user interface.

From what I know, Apple has removed firewire support from all new products. So the iPhone 3G will know longer charge if what was charging it was using the firewire pin, instead of the USB. I have 2 chargers that chage my 5th Gen. iPod, and the 2G iphone, that no longer work for this reason. Apple has stated that an adapter for the charging problem will be made.
