The bug was that if you deleted or moved a message, and you went to the web mobile me, it would still be in your inbox as well as your deleted items folder. Since doing the 2.1 update on my iPhone, I deleted an email and went to the web and low and behold it was not longer in the inbox.

So Apple is listening and making things better.

EDIT: Still borked!

2nd EDIT: It is now working as it should be.

I just tested this myself and it was not fixed. Are you sure that you did not use your desktop client at the same time?

Seems to be fixed for me as well. I deleted an e-mail from my iphone and went to safari and logged into MobilMe...and it was gone.

I was thinking this could require a change to both the iPhone and MobileMe Web Client. Maybe they are rolling out the fix to the MobileMe side and I have not got it yet.

Maybe others will post their results.

I wasn't aware that this was a bug, but more a function of how IMAP worked as a protocol and multiple client apps. No?

No. It has been working different when you delete from the iPhone then when you delete from any other IMAP Client. Like Outlook on Windows.

With IMAP when you delete an email message it is really TAGGED for deleting until you actually "Purge it (this is what Outlook calls it)". If you delete in Outlook, Outlook just puts a LINE THRU the mail message.

I just did another test an when I delete from the iPhone it is still in the INBOX (with no indication of being deleted) and it is ALSO in the Trash Folder. This is how it has always worked for me. However, I have just noticeD that if I delete from the Trash folder (on the iPhone) it does get deleted from MobileMe but it is still in the INBOX. I am not sure if this is the way it worked before or not since I was most concerned about the INBOX. Also, they stay in the INBOX even after new emails come into the INBOX. As before, if I delete 1 from the INBOX all are deleted.

Right, we're going to get Medieval on this problem.

This is bad troubleshooting technique, because we are going to address all the issues at the same time, and not bother with locating the heart of the issue (because there really isn't one to find, it's just MobileMe).

Firstly, let's get up to date. Go to System Preferences>Software Update>Check Now. Get all the updates that are available.

Once that is complete, go to System Preferences and ensure that you have the MobileMe panel. If it still says .Mac we need to click on it, and under Account, Sign Out. Go back to the System Preferences window and wait 5 minutes. You should get a pop up about updating MobileMe or the such, choose yes to what it offers you and allow it to update.

If you don't get offered the update, don't worry, run software update again and see if anything new is there.

If nothing happens then, let's carry on without the update. We need to reset all the synced data on MobileMe, so ensure that your computer has all the data you wish to sync present and correct.

Go to System Preferences>MobileMe (or .Mac) and enter your details again. Then go to System Preferences>MobileMe (or.Mac)>Sync and at the bottom of the window, Advanced. Choose to Reset Sync Data

Go back to the Sync window and firstly ensure syncing with MobileMe is set to Automatically, and then press Sync Now. It will take several minutes to send all the data to the MobileMe servers.

You should now have clean data on MobileMe and your computer will sync correctly with MobileMe.

Now, to correct the iPhone issue. We have clean data on MobileMe so the issue lies on the phone now. I recommend going to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>MobileMe and choose to delete the account.

Once that is done, turn the phone on and off, then go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars and add the account again.

Wait up to ten minutes for your data to be added to the phone. A wifi connection will speed this process up.

If the problem still persists, ensure you have updated to 2.1, and test it again. If the problem is still present, restore the phone to 2.1 and restore your user data at the end of the restore process.

Finally, if this still hasn't resolved the issue, there may be a corruption in your user data and that is the source of the problem. Restore the phone, but don't put your backup onto it. Start fresh by choosing to set up as a new phone.

This is a monster post, so please read carefully, and don't hesitate to ask for clarification.

Whilst it is true that this goes deeper than a configuration issue, in some cases the act of reconfiguring MobileMe completely addresses the problem.

In this case, action yields far greater results than inaction does.

Maybe you do not understand. No amount of action will FIX this kind of BUG. I do agree that your proceedure is good for a "problem" related to setup or corrected data. But this is not the same as an email not being deleted on MobileMe when you delete it on your iPhone. This is just a BUG.

Workarounds for iPhone/MobileMe MOVE/TRASH issue

I have two workarounds for this. Since they are workarounds, they are of course not very good.

My understanding ( as a user ) is firstly that trashing is just a folder move to a folder called Trash.
Therefore, the problem as posted above also applies to moving a message between folders on the iPhone - the original message appears to linger in MobileMe.

Secondly, that an IMAP trashing consists of three steps: (a) COPY the message to Trash folder, (b) mark the original message for deletion, (c) 'expunge' the messages marked for deletion. Step (b) is a problem in MobileMe, since messages marked for deletion are not highlighted to the user in any way, so they look like they have not been processed. So, the trick is to convince MobileMe to do an EXPUNGE.

WORKAROUND 1
------------
This works for me directly in MobileMe: Move any message from the Inbox to another folder - causes MobileMe to expunge all messages-marked-for-deletion from the Inbox.

Say you have trashed ten messages from your iPhone Inbox. When you go to MobileMe, you will see the ten messages in the Trash folder (but you might not remember which ten). These are the MOVED messages. You also see the original ten messages still in the Inbox folder. These messages have indeed been marked for deletion (I can see that from from my sync'd Outlook2007), but MobileMe just isn't showing you that. If you move any message from the Inbox ( say, manually move one of your trashed messages to Trash ) all ten messages will disappear!

WORKAROUND 2
------------

If you have Outlook2007, you can force MobileMe to purge. In Outlook2007, select your me.com account, and then the inbox. You may see your marked-for-deletion-messages with a strikethrough and greyed out. Select Edit > Purge > Purge marked items in xxxx@me.com.

Alternatively, in Outlook2007, you can automate the purging slightly. Navigate to: Tools > Account Settings > (select your me.com account) > Change > More Settings > General. Check the checkbox 'Purge items when switching folders online'. Once you have done this, all you have to do is visit your Inbox from Outlook2007, then leave the folder or close Outlook and the purge will happen automatically.

I hope this helps some people. It certainly helps me, because I use my iPhone to classify my emails for actions as they come in. So now, by using these workarounds, MobileMe can catch up on what I have done.

Luck to all,
P.

I have been using your WORKAROUND 2 since I started using MobileMe. This allows me to keep it clean.

What I find interesting is the bug is not just a MobileMe Bug (i.e. not showing what has been deleted). Assuming they fixed this there is still no way with the iPhone to actually Purge/EXPUNGE the deleted messages. Since you can Purge/EXPUNGE with Outlook and other Mail Clients I have to assume this is a bug with the iPhone.

So for me there is 2 bugs:

1. MobileMe does not SHOW which messages have been deleted.

2. The iPhone can't Purge/EXPUNGE messages from MobileMe (like other IMAP Clients). If you can do this with other IMAP Servers then this is part iPhone and part MobileMe.

Resurrect this thread

I was playing with MobileMe email today an noticed that it finally removes emails from the webapp when I delete them on the iPhone. Up until recently, if you deleted or moved an email within the iPhone for a MobileMe account and went to the website, it would still appear in the inbox. Now it no longer does. The email message goes where it is supposed to go. IE in the trash or the moved folder, and a copy of it is NOT left behind in the Inbox.

I assume this go fixed in their last major MobileMe server side fix. I really appreciate Apple squashing this most annoying bug!

did the bug fix the outlook delete?

i am running outlook 2003 with all the service packs on xp. when i delete an email from the pda it gets deleted on my me.com inbox but NOT from outlook.

alternatively, when i delete an email from outlook it doesnt get deleted from either pda or me.com inbox.

receiving works on pda, outlook and me.com.

for those of us for whom this pda is a business tool, isnt the whole point that we, even outlook pop3 users, delete emails once?

is my setup wrong or is the bug not fixed? the "chat" guy at me.com support was useless and wasted a half hour of my life.

thanks for any advice you can share.

It should be working fine now. Did you setup you Outlook as explained on the following web page. The bug was related to deleting on the iPhone and not getting deleted on MobileMe. Make sure you are using IMAP in Outlook and not POP3 (not sure POP3 would even download the email).

fixed outlook delete problem

Hi Mike - thanks. wish i had seen your post an hour ago. i just got off a chat with a great mobileme support guy. i had the outlook setup wrong. i was looking in my outlook primary folder and inbox, not my mobile me folder. once i figured out how to set up an imap acct (pop3 before) i got all the folders i needed. i must say, if this works as well as it appears, i will be a new mobile me fan. for small business people without servers this is superb.
