iPhone 2.1 update, but now it can't start. Urgent help needed!!!

Hi guys, i will appreciate any USEFUL help i can get to solve my problem, coz' i need to use the phone in school tomorrow morning. So thanks in advance anyway.

Firstly, i Just bought an iPhone 3G last month, and i heard about the new firmware 2.1, and decided to uodate just a few moments ago.
Everything during the process was woking just fine, however, when the updating completed on iTunes on my pc, then the phone will have an apple icon and a circle loading icon right? Then is was like, just a few minutes later the loading icon stucked. I decided to make a reboot by pressing the home + power button. Then my cousin suggested to hold the home button (when off) and plug in the USB cable. Then there will be a usual apple logo, and then a few seconds later, the iTunes logo n a USB cable picture appeared on my iPhone. But, when i wanted to check if my device is sync with the computer, and i start iTunes, it says "An unrecognised error has occured." Or something close to that.
Secondly, i downloaded the 2.1 firmware directly through iTunes when it prompt me to. My cousin's iPod touch worked just fine, but mine has big problems...

EXTREMELY URGENT USEFUL HELP NEEDED PLEASE...

Have you tried to restore it from DFU mode instead of restore mode? These instructions work for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

I would also restart your computer before reconnecting the device.

Not yet restart my computer, but iTunes and computer can't even detect there is a device connected to it. Moreover, i just turned on the phone and it keeps haf that apple logo and a loading circular icon, i will restart my computer now. Also, i've just re-downloaded my iTunes 8.0 in case the problem is with itunes. I can't do it in DFU mode since i'm not sure what is it or how to do so other during jailbreaking of my 2.0.2 version last time. i'm gonna restart my computer, meanwhile, feel free for any more suggestions.

I need my phone for tomorrow... Please, all useful and professional help needed!!! THANKS ALL!!

Hey, your post does helps. THANKS A LOT, MAN!!! I just have to restart my computer and the DFU mode can be set. Previously, i can't seem to enable iTunes to detect my phone.

Anyway, i have another question to ask. If i turn on EDGE, without my sim card, would it be still possible for my service provider (in this case is SingTel) to charge me? Cos' during the first month bill, i didn't know quite much and was charged quite a sum on internet only. Many thanks again!!
