Assuming it is not possible to choose the Qualcomm X20 ( 10nm ) and X24 ( 7nm ) as it is too late into the cycle. But Apple has used and tested X16 thoroughly with the iPhone X. And as far as I can see X16 offer everything the current XS Modem, Intel XMM 7560 has to offer, only likely to have better performance.

So would you want a Qualcomm X16 Modem in your 2019 iPhone, or an Intel XMM 7660 Modem which is better on paper spec.

On the business side it is good for all parties as Intel gave up on Smartphone Modem, and they are severely lacking in Fab capacity at the moment, there is more to gain in getting more CPUs and Server Chips out than honouring the ~100M 2019 iPhone Modem orders. And there is nothing to lose from Qualcomm, only Apple will need to make some last min changes.

Personally I don't want to wait another year for an Qualcomm iPhone.

I'm glad I bought an Xs with plans for it to hold me over for the return of Qualcomm in 2020, instead of buying a 2019 phone and waiting until 2021 to upgrade again.

That said, while my phone often shows 1 bar around the house (but usually four full bars at work), it hasn't dropped a call yet and seems to be fine. But ultimately I'd still prefer Qualcomm.

When I first got my XSM cellular performance was awful. But after several firmware and iOS updates it actually works pretty well now. I just wish the phone itself had better RF performance. The intel modem works great now with a strong signal from AT&T, but under low to moderate signal conditions reception and performance is very poor. This is where Qualcomm really shines

That is one reason why many ( including me ) had hope Intel 7660 will be even better.

But one thing Qualcomm, even the X16 had was Dual Sim Dual VoLTE, compared to Intel's Dual Sim Dual Standby on 7560 AND 7660.
