iPhone 2g 3.0 tethering on T-Mobile help

I read the sticky and believe I followed the directions but I can't seem to get zsrelay and the iPhoneModem.de helper app to connect on my computer to tether with my phone. I installed OpenSSH on my phone and use SBSettings to turn it on. I am able to connect with my phone to the ad hoc wireless network when prompted by the helper app, but then the computer doesn't seem to connect to the phone and I get a message telling me to check my phone's WLAN settings. Can anyone help? Thanks!
 
I ended up using PDANet for this. It seems to work fine, but there's always a PDANet process running on my phone, even when I have it turned off. Any idea how I can stop it from running all the time? It seems to take some battery life, unfortunately.
