Iphone 2G data plan info

Ok so i currently have a phone, not an iphone, and i have a plan for unlimited data and messaging for $30 a month. A friend of mine has an iphone 2G he's going to sell to me and i was wondering if i can still use this plan ($30 a month for data and messaging). I know that I don't have to have the 3G plan since its a 2G phone, but can i stay with the $30 a month for data and messaging? Any help is appreciated, and the sooner the better

i believe the unlimited Edge data plan is 20 bucks.

When I had the 1st gen iPhone, my data plan was $20 and it included 200 text messages.

I'm pretty sure that AT&T will have you use that plan when you activate the iPhone.

do you mean when i put my sim card in? so if i used it, it would get rid of my current data/messaging plan and i would have to get a new one?

No such thing as an iPhone 2G... The phones ARE iPhone, iPhone 3G (representing the 3G network connectivity), iPhone 3GS

People refer to the first gen iPhone as the 2G, because EDGE is aka as 2.5G.

oh sorry, i just referred to it as a 2G because i thought that most people would recognize it as that. Despite what i called it however, i still haven't gotten an answer. So, to clarify, i have a phone with a data plan and I am considering buying an iphone from someone and simply switching my sim card. The phone is not 3G so there is no need for a 3G data plan so, could i simply keep my current data/messaging plan or will i be forced to switch.

EDGE/EGPRS is implemented as a bolt-on enhancement for 2G and 2.5G GSM and GPRS networks, making it easier for existing GSM carriers to upgrade to it. EDGE/EGPRS is a superset to GPRS and can function on any network with GPRS deployed on it, provided the carrier implements the necessary upgrade.


It is not inaccurate to refer to it as 2G.

Plans for the original iPhone start at $20, which includes 200 messages. For unlimited data + text, you'll end up paying $40 total.

Once you start using the iPhone you'll get a notification about having an incorrect data plan for your phone. If you ignore it, eventually a system sweep will automatically do the change.

ok so do i need to cancel the current data/messaging plan i have, or will it just switch, i know you said it would switch automatically but i just want to make sure i mean i don't want to pay for two plans or anything haha. do you know what messaging plan is one step lower than unlimited, isn't it like 1500 for $15 a month? if it is i may just get that so i only pay 35 instead of 40 a month total

Add $15 and $30 to that for extra texts
