I've had a 3G for ages but thought I'd jailbreak and unlock my old 2G so my girlfriend could use it.

It had been working fine without a SIM for ages (just for games etc.) but when I turned it on yesterday it would only allow emergency calls and I couldn't get in. I've turned it on and off loads of times and it always just goes back to the emergency calls only screen.

It said I needed to connect to itunes and restore, so forced the phone to recovery mode and connected to itunes. itunes downloaded the software no probs and tried to install, but quickly came up with the error "The iphone could not be restored. An unknown error (23) has occured.

I'm stuck!! Does anyone know what I need to do?

So can you make an emergency call at all? Try it and if that fails, well, I think it's been "bricked" like what is happening to some 3G and 3GS.

Yes I know you have a 2G iPhone. Generally on the 3G and 3GS, an error 23 means there is a radio communication failure and nothing can be done to fox that except return it to the Apple store for an exchange.

Does the screen turn white with nothing on it when iTunes tries to put in in restore mode? If so, that's what mine did and I had to bring it in to Apple.

Still having no luck. Have tried those, but still getting that error 23.

Took it to see the :apple: "genius bar" and have to say that genius is really not an accurate desciption. lol

They tried the same things as I'd already done and then told me it didn't work. I had realised that, as it was why I'd taken the phone in to see them! They also said that error 23 was an "unknown error". The screen already said that! It was not the most productive 50 mile round trip I've ever made. :(

I guess I'm a bit stuck as I don't seem to be able to update the firmware or do a restore.

Anyone else got any suggestions?

Cheers! :)

I literally laughed out loud with that .... And not for what you think ... Genius. haha

Have you tried DFU or only restore mode? They are different.

Doh! Spelling never was my fortay! lol

Yeah, I've tried DFU and restore mode. With restore mode itunes comes up with progress bar and a message saying it's waiting for my iphone, but never connects. With DFU mode if gets another progress bar as it trys to start the restore and then just gives that error 23.

You never answered my question on what happens when you try to make an emergency phone call. Does it try to connect and then say the call failed?

When my iPhone gave me the same error, the emergency calls only message popped up and when I tried to make an emergency call, they failed. If they fail, this is a hardware problem that can't be fixed. The genius had no idea what he was talking about. The one that exchanged my iPhone had no idea either but he exchanged it because he couldn't get it to restore either.

Not that it's a good idea to phone Emergency Service just to test a phone... ;)
