Hi there,

I've an iPhone 2g since more or less 2 years.

I first unlock/jailbreak it with ziphone and never done nothing else leaving it with 1.1.4 firmware till today.

I wanted to upgrade the firmware but unfortunately I said Yes to the iTunes upgrade ruining my iPhone.

Now the only thing I can do is to turn it on and turn it off and with iTunes 9.1 I can't restore it.

Please, can anybody tell me what I could do to restore/upgrade my iPhone? Is it to throw in the trash?

HELP!
 
I have down graded my 2G Classic from 3.0 to 2.2 so that I could help a developer with Beta Testing.

The biggest thing I had to do was dump iTunes 9.01. I had to uninstall all apple software and then installed 8.0 onto my computer. Once I had iTunes 8.0 up and running...downgrading was simple simple simple.

Hope that helps in some way.

This was brought to my attention today. I havent tried it yet but it is supposed to be the jailbreak for 3.1. It says 3G so dont know if it will work on a 2G.

It just appears the image to connect the iPhone to iTunes. But if I put in it my SIM card which is Italian it says to me that iTunes can't recognize it. And if I put the original AT&T says to me to activate the SIM, which is impossible to me because I live abroad.

With that said, how can I restore the iPhone?
How can I put the 1.1.4 or later version again on it?

Ok basically upgrading straight through iTunes to OS 3.1 has removed your unlock and "hacktivation". This means that iTunes wants you to activate the phone with an AT&T sim which as you said you don't have.

Don't worry though, it's all fixable :)

I'm guessing you're a bit behind on the whole jailbreak/unlock thing. Google "dev team blog" and read the top post there (3.fun I think it is). I found their blog kind of confusing when I started all this so the basic situation right now is that you can unlock your phone now on 3.1 if you have access to a mac. You will do this through an application called Pwnage Tool. If you do not have access to a mac I think you have to wait a little longer until the dev team release the 3.1 version of an application called Redsn0w.

This can be a bit confusing so, if you do have a mac to run Pwnage tool on google "iclarified tutorials" and select the one for jailbreaking and unlocking a 2G iphone onto 3.1

Follow their instructions and you'll be good as gold. If you can't get hold of a mac then sit tight until Redsn0w's released and then search for its tutorial on iClarified.

Someone else might be able to tell you how to downgrade from your current firmware (3.1) to the previous firmware (3.0) which would allow you to use the older 3.0 version of Redsn0w. Unfortunately I don't know how to downgrade an iPhone.

Yes, I do have access to a Mac, and yesterday I've tried so read DevTeam Blog.
Basically I've downloaded the Pwnage tool into two macs and when I downloaded the ipws file it told me that the file was no good (tried with any version)
Is this iClarified a different thing? Is it just a tutorial or a file?

No problem :)

iClarified is a website which publishes tutorials on how to unlock/jailbreak using the dev-team's applications.

It's fantastic mainly because it give you links to all the files you need :)
The link from Moi un Mouton's post should make everything clear. Also don't be worried if Pwnage Tool seems to stay on the "building ipsw" page for ages. It can take a while.

It worked and now I can enjoy my iPhone again.

Do you have any app from Cydia or ICy to suggest me?

No problem :D From now on when an update comes out don't update through iTunes just wait the few days it takes for a new Pwnage Tool to be released then update though that.

As for free apps (I assume you mean cracked), they're more trouble than they're worth. I tried to use a cracked version of an app because they'd updated it since I'd trialed it and I wanted to know if it was still worth buying. It was a complete pain, I should have just bought it from the off.

thanks again. So the only way that I have app is through cydia and icy? Basically if i want to find an app for facebook for example, where do i find it? (for example i didn't find it).

Oh riiiiiight. (I thought you meant cracked apps, which are illegal free versions of apps you're meant to pay for)

I forgot you were on 1.1.4 before. Ok, you're looking for the App Store. You should see the logo on your phone. Looks like this

This is where you can download all the official non-jailbreak apps like Facebook etc

You can also browse apps on your computer from iTunes. Start iTunes, click on "iTunes Store," then look for a tab at the top that says "App Store."

So in other words is just like if I had a "real" iPhone. So i'm able also to connect to itunes, download and buy apps just like any other iphone?
Thanks, sorry for this further clarification, but I lived with the 1.1.4 for more than a year:)
