ok i have an iphone first generation, i have it on firmware 1.1.4 , 04.03.13_G
and i wanted to upgrade to 2.1 because i wanted to have the app store and stuff. the phone is jailbroken, unlocked. i have a att sim card but here is the deal:
the plan is one of the cheapest one. the cheapest internet and i basically pay like 30 bucks a month. and since the baseband its unlocked i enjoy full access to internet and using an iphone at a cheap price a month.
the thing is that. when i upgraded to 2.1 and the phone went to a locked state again. which is normal i thought. but once i plugged to the computer and opened itunes. the itunes programs wants me to upgrade the plan and i will endup paying more money, so what i want to ask.
is there a way to upgrade to 2.1 without having the problem with the baseband.. or is it out of the question? i tried using quickn or pwnage tool and it unlocks the phone and jailbreaks it but it does not recognize the carrier and i cant make phone calls. so... is there anything that i can do? i actually tried another sim that belongs to another iphone and has a more expensive plan. but it does the same. tries to change the priceplan. so... am i doing something wrong????
can someone give me some advice?
for now i had to go back to 1.1.4 and flash the baseband and went back to 04.03.13_G
but i cant have app store wich sucks.
thanks guys

I know how frustrating that can be. I had difficulties upgrading and unlocking my family's 1st gen iPhone's this past week but finally had success. I would try to explain but the best is to try the procedure here:

carefully follow the directions listed and you should be fine. Lemme know. Good luck!

i just checked your reply and i am about to open it and try it. thanks a bunch. ill let you know as soon as i do it. thanks again.;)

That guide should work great. What you are doing is activating the phone to bypass iTunes activation, and unlocking the phone to work with any sim card (which you might not need to do since you are on ATT, but it depends on how old your sim card is). Plus, you can install Cydia if you want apps that apple doesnt approve of.

hey i followed the guide. and it worked greaaaaaaaaaaaaat. sweet . now it is activated and with my same pay plan so i am very satisfied. thanks a lot. i spent two days looking on the net for a way to do it. but then i thought. what better place to post my question than macrumors. thanks a lot m98evolution
