Hello. I've looked at the various sticky posts re: pwnage etc., and searched the forums for a situation similar to mine without any results.

I have an ATT family plan with a 3G iPhone and a normal cell phone.

I got a hand-me-down iPhone 2G with 2.0. I'd like to be able to use the 2G to simply make calls and use wifi on it to do emails, etc.

In other words, I'd like to pop the SIM from the normal cell phone into the 2G. I did this and of course it wants me to activate the phone via iTunes.

Reading about unlocking/jailbreaking, it seems that you still have to activate the iPhone and you'll be charged the data plan from ATT. If I wanted the additional data plan, I'd just activate it normally.

Is there a way to make my 2G (2.0) iPhone act like a normal cell phone with my current voice-only plan and then use the wifi on it to do the more data-intensive stuff?

Thanks!

Thank you for the reply. I did search and mentioned that I didn't find anything with my exact situation.

The results tended to be either to use the iPhone as an iPod touch (without activation) or use it with a data plan via ATT or TMobile. I don't want the data plan, am already an ATT customer, and just want it to act like a normal cell phone to make calls but also have wifi capability to do the data intensive stuff.

Edit:
I did some more looking around and have come to the conclusion that if you want to do what I was hoping you need to activate the phone with ATT and get the data plan. I was hoping that there was another way.

definitely possible

this is definitely possible. first of all check with at&t. the original 2g iphone does not need a data plan anymore, so if you activate it through itunes, i don't think you have to get the data plan.

if that's not true, then do this: download pwnagetool and create a custom 2.2.1 firmware. the baseband on the original iphone does not matter, so you can do this regardless of the firmware. look around for tutorials online, iclarified has a really good one. if you do this correctly, it will "hacktivate" your iphone and you can use it with any carrier and do not need a data plan

this really works, i have an iphone 2g with no data plan and i love it. i don't need the data because i have wifi everywhere so i figured this would be a better bet
good luck!

IIRC, there are people who do pay as you go. If you're wanting a monthly voice contract, I don't know what to suggest.
