iPhone 3G - 11/7/08 to 8/4/10

Well, that's it. It's official, the iPhone 3G was today killed off by Apple.

Let's be honest though, who was actually expecting the 3G to support multi-tasking with that amount of RAM?

I'm going to enjoy telling my wife I was right in September last year when I bought my iPhone. I told her that the extra £100 to buy the 3GS would be a better long term investment, but I was happy simply to be getting an iPhone.

Oh well, it looks like I'll need to pick up either a new iPhone when they launch in the summer, or a 3GS if the price drops in light of the new iPhone launching.

Well, I wouldn't call it officially dead until the new OS is released lol. But Apple won't even be making the 3G anymore once the HD/4G comes out this summer, imo.

We will probably see the iPhone HD available in 32GB and 64GB models, and the 16GB iPhone 3GS will probably become the new "base model", like the 8GB 3G is now.

You've been fine with it for two years already.. Now that they announce improvements for it and it doesn't get all of them, you say it's dead

Its possible to use 'outdated' software/ hardware. If it still works for what you need it to do then it shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah, I would go along with that.

This version of iPhone OS will be the last one the iPhone 3G receives, of that there can be no doubt.

As I said in another thread though, I feel sorry for users of the first iPhone because they didn't even get a mention and it looks like they're not even getting iPhone 4.0 despite the hardware specs being the same.

Oh well, at least I'll get the new Snow Leopard style dock and background wallpapers ... oh and iBooks and Folders. Better than nothing, but the way we were told right at the end of the presentation that the 3G wouldn't do multi-tasking was cruel. I expected it to be the case, I was actually sitting here going, "Come on, what's it going to run on".

If you've read my other posts mate, you'll see that I've owned an iPhone 3G since September 2009 and bought it on PAYG from the Apple Store in Glasgow.

People would do well to READ what people write, not skim it ... I clearly mention that I bought my 3G in September and explain my own circumstances for such.

Well, that was your fault to go for the low-end back then. I know you are mad now but wait few days and then rethink it. Multitasking isn't life changing IMO.

Anyway, you have better luck than the 2G iPhone owners, they got nothing (so far).

I'm not "mad" mate, I'm incredibly calm ... it's only a phone at the end of the day, and you're going to get people coming on here soon a hell of a lot angrier than you seem to think I am.

I explained why I went for the "low end", and I knew I was when I bought it. I also explained (again, why am I having to repeat myself?) that I've maintained all week that the 3G would not support multi-tasking ... it's not got the RAM.

The reason I went for the 3G was because a) the wife moaned at me wanting to spend an extra £100 on "a phone", b) in retrospect it wasn't wise, but at the time the extra £100 went towards other things, c) at the time I accepted that I was "lucky to be buying an iPhone".

I'm not mad, I'm not angry, I'm not going to curse and swear and call Apple every name under the sun. **** happens, older technology is left behind, I accept and understand that.

As you said, at least the 3G is getting 4.0 which is a kick in the teeth to owners of the original iPhone. All I'm doing, in this thread and others, is calmly getting involved in debate regarding the iPhone 3G and the lack of multi-tasking support.

By all accounts the 3G will support Folders, which will really help when it comes to grouping together my games and such, and we're getting the Snow Leopard style dock which has been seen in use on the iPad UI, as well as custom wallpapers. There's some nice changes, and multi-tasking would have been great after seeing how Apple have implemented it, but again ... I wasn't expecting it for the 3G.

Anyone who did really only has themselves to blame.

i got a 3g about 2 months ago (bad timing i know) it was my birthday present from my parents and my sister i jailbroke it and got it how i like it and have been thrilled to finally have a phone better than a cheap nokia.

having a 3gs would be awesome but i dont use pandora, don't use chat clients, don't use gps often (google maps or mapquest 4 mobile is enough for me) i would rather not upgrade to 4.0 because i have my phone exactly the way i want it and i don't really see how 4.0 will make it any better than it is. i just wish the 3g would be able to open/close apps faster, i dont really need to run more than one at the same time.

i dont plan on upgrading during my 2 year contract unless the new rumored iphone is cheap (a joke i know) or the iphone 3gs somehow becomes available to me from at&t or used off ebay or something.

i guess what i'm trying to say is even if the 3g is 2 year old tech (or whatever i dont know) its still a great phone and dont be bummed if youre like me and bought one recently.

The 3G would still work.... OS 4.0 is not just about multi-tasking.
