I'm reading a lot on the net about the fact that the iphone 3G activation will be done instore, and that there will be a new version of iTunes released as well. Does anyone know yet it that means that we will be unable to hack the 3G model or is it too early to tell. My main reason for asking is that I want to use a carrier of my choice and not be forced into that selection purely because I want to use an iPhone. I'm still assuming that update to firmware will still be released through iTunes so this is probably not an issue.

Anyone got any insights??

I went into an Apple store and they told me i could buy the iphone there but i need to activate it using itunes.

I think everything will be done through itunes and not instore.

Well, for AT&T you will have to do it instore, but I'm not so sure about Apple's store..

Either way, they probably won't let you leave the place until you sign on the dotted line..
