My trusty old computer is aging, and the lack of USB2 on my lampshade iMac G4 makes me sad sometimes..

..like when I plan to get an iPhone. Will it really not work at all with my computer? Will I have to buy a new Mac if I'm buying an iPhone?

Edit: seems USB 1 is problematic from the thread here, so I guess I might have to use my work-computer or something. Adress book sync and similar is wireless, but iPhoto syncing will be a hassle..

oh well.

This isn't an official answer, but I don't see why USB 1 (or 1.1) wouldn't work since they are all backwards compatible with USB 2.0. I would think it would just be a lot slower.

I'm the guy who posted the thread you ended up linking to. I thought I'd let you know that I got it to work, and how.

It wasn't that difficult: it was iTunes 8.0 that did the trick, actually. I downloaded and upgraded the day it was released, and then I started getting that syncing error message that I've seen other people on these forums have had issues with. I saw this as an improvement, as before iTunes wasn't detecting my iPhone at all, and now it was at least noticing something was there!

So, like many others have done, I simply left the iPhone connected to my Powerbook and restarted the computer, and when it started back up, everything worked great! I have since synced, upgraded to 2.1, and now I am not having any issues what so ever with my Powerbook detecting my iPhone's presence.

I hope this helps, and you can get that thing working :)
