I have an att connection with a 15$ data plan which is for 3g data access on non smart phones. Can I buy an iphone 3g on craigslist, put the att sim on this phone and use the same data plan?

If not, If I jailbreak the phone would i be able to use on the same data plan? Would att automatically change my data plan to 30$ plan? Pls throw some light.

Also, once a phone is jailbroken and its updated to new version of OS say 3.0.2, does it need to be jailbroken again? how much does it cost to jailbreak?

your inputs are greatly appreciated.

You might get away with it for a couple of months, but at&T will catch you and change your plan to the iphone data plan, since they can identify which phone are your connecting through.

You can use your sim card, but iPhone will only able to make calls. All data function will not work. AT&T does not allow access to data network for unregistered devices. To register AT&T will ask for your device imei ID. Once provided, they would know it is iphone...

There is no way to fool around really.

Not one person has ever had this happen on these forums. All AT&T will do is warn you to change your plan but they will not change the plan for you. By the way to the OP, I've been using a GoPhone sim in my iPhone for a few months now. It works fine and the sim card will even activate the iPhone after a restore using 3.0, not so with 2.2.1.

How much are you paying for data going that route?

I don't have a data plan for my GoPhone sim so it's pay per use which is expensive just as any of the two data plans that AT&T offers for GoPhone users. I have the 200 SMS add on.

I use SBSettings to turn off data so I don't get charged one cent every few minutes or accidentally forget which iPhone I picked up and try to check email. Something on the phone accesses data every few minutes and I see the charge is one cent or a few cents. They add up and once in a while I still get charged a cent even with SBSettings blocking data.

I just use that phone for my job instead of my 3G S iPhone with its real iPhone plan.

I don't know the details of the $15 plan the OP is talking about, nor do I care about saving $15 a month, but what are the advantages of doing what the OP wants? I like having unlimited data and not having to worry about what I do. Wouldn't the $15 plan cripple the use of an iPhone?

Yes it would limit what you can do. There is no $15 data plan. There is 1MB for $4.99 or 100MB for $19.99. Far too expensive.

The only benefit to using a GoPhone sim is being able to use the iPhone as your phone instead of some stupid Samsung flip phone and you can cancel it anytime with no contract, that it.

I have a samsung rugby.I added the 30 dollar unl data and messaging plan before i put my att sim into my unlocked iphone.Messaging works fine but there is no data. When i checked my account online to see if the data plan was on my account i noticed that my phone was changed to the iphone.

$19.99 Gophone data plan and Iphone 3GS

I also have a $19.99 100mb Data Plan with an ATT GoPhone contract. I put the SIM in my 3GS and I can make and receive calls, texts etc but I cannot connect to the internet. Each time I try it says 'no Cellular Data Network connection available'.

Do I need ATT to activate something or is it a case of use the APN toolkit (http:unlockit.co.nz) mentioned in a previous posting?

Any advice appreciated.

Yes, you need to go to that site on your iPhone and configure it to work with the data plan. 3.0 is designed to stop non iPhone sims from being able to use data but by going to that site, it can be changed very easily. 2.2.1 does not disable data from being used on non approved sims.

I have a sony ericsson 3g phone and have a 15$ data plan. It can open regular webpages.

how long have u been using it? I read att calls customers and inform them that they are holding an iphone and their plan would be changed to the iphone plan.

is that true? now i am not sure if I can keep the 15$ plan. If I have to have a 30$ plan, I might as well get a new phone from att. Pls guide me.

its true

I just tried this on my wife's sim card. She is using my old iPhone 3G and she doesn't use data that extensively to justify $30/month charge.

She has a Nokia, so I put that IMEI number on the account and 10$ a month data plan (its unlimited and not different from what we use with iPhone) just the APN is different.

But the phone had no data connection, then I went to http:unlockit.co.nz as mentioned above, choose ATT in the drop down (for which APN is wap.cingular) and saved it

Now everything is fine. data.. sms... voice..

thats nice. Does anybody know how long this works before att comes to know that iphone is being used and ask users to upgrade the plan.

Omg It Works!!!!

Well I wanted to post this so badly I went and made an account..

Here is my sitch.
I had a samsung eternity which tries to look and act like an Iphone.. It was cool but it broke. I really miss it (especially the CV free video app. If you know how to get this on an iphone please email me onemancircus(at)yahoo)
I had the $15 unlimited data and $15 unlimited text combo pack but I'm pretty sure you can get just the data.

I went to that apn changer site listed above... Followed the prompts...
Turned my phone off and on and
Whallla! I can now check email.. surf the web.. google map on the fly.. everything it could do when hooked up to wifi that it wasn't doing away from the house.
I checked my plan on att's site. It showed I have the iphone but I told it that it was wrong. It changed the pic next to my name to some generic phone.
If they try to make me change my plan I will go back to using one of my old phones or I'll switch to tmobile.. SCREW YOU AT&T!!! YOU ARE ALREADY GETTING ENOUGH OF MY MONEY!

So.. there.. I'm happy to report I has success with this!
Good luck to you all.. email me if you want cuz I don't plan on checking back.

Peace,
~Circus

Where is the $15 unlimited data plan for non-smart phones? I see on this link there's a 1 MB data plan for $4.99 and a 100 MB plan for $19.99.

If this $15 data plan works, it seems like the $0.25/minute Simple Plan + $15 unlimited data is the best deal for someone like me who doesn't make/take cell phone calls often but uses data a lot. Much better than T-Mobile Pay As You Go now that you can't use the Sidekick plan anymore.
