I'd been setting up an email account, and browsing the web. I locked the phone, then a few minutes later tried to unlock it. The slide to unlock screen appeared, but the slider wouldn't respond to my finger. After several tries, the screen went black. Neither the home button or the lock button would bring the display back on.

I reset the phone by holding the home and lock button until the apple logo appeared, and everything seems to be fine now, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and if it's likely to have been a simple crash, or a sign of things to come.

All input appreciated
Neil

I occasionally saw that with my 2.5g iphone.

was hoping it was due to an old battery but I guess it is something else.

Thanks for the reply......is that on the new 2.0 firmware mate?

It used to happen on my 2.5g iPhone with the old 1.1.4 software.

have not seen it on my iphone 3G.

I do plan on updating my 2.5g to 2.0 software. But I am going use the 2.5 simply for playing games or listening to music etc. It no longer has phone service.

I had the same thing. I had to restore my firmware.

Thanks again for the replies gents :)

Did it keep happening to you to prompt you to restore, or did you have to restore to get it working the first time it happened?

Just experienced the whitescreen of death when i pressed the homekey after checking gmail.

Did a google search on my lap top. I tried to "shut down" by pressing the power button to no avail.

I tried to press both the home button and power button for soft reset to no avail.

I held down the home button and power button for, like, 5 minutes inadvertantly as I was reading something on my laptop, and I apparently did a hard reset.

I read somewhere that I should have taken it to the apple store to swap for a new one, but the nearest apple store from where I live is a days trip away, and I didn't want to deal with the cellular people...\

My phone was not jailbroken or anything....brand new spank'n 1 week of iphone 3g 8gb black.

It never showed any messages like "YOU GOTTA RESTORE YOUR IPHONE FIRMWARE CAUSE YOUR PHONE IS USLESS NOW". I restored iphone cause there was nothing else to do. After restore iphone was working as normal.

No...I didn't mean did the phone actually give you a prompt, I meant what prompted you, as in did it keep happening, so you decided to do a full restore rather than resetting all the time, or did resetting not work, so you had to restore?

Cheers
Neil

Ventmore,
I just read your post and this just happened to me over the weekend. My I-Phone 3g is less than 2 weeks old. I did what you had done and reset the phone holding the shut off and home key and it fixed it. Thank you!!!

No probs mate...glad you're up and running.

Just as an FYI, I've only had a similar thing happen maybe twice since, so it must have been a simple crash :)

it happened to me, i have iphone3g with 2.2 firmware, after holding lock and home key it worked fine...

Just bought my phone a week before Christmas. The software is updated. And about 3 days later, this same issue happened. There was a blank screen but the phone rang when I received calls however there was no way to answer it. I rebooted and seems to working fine so far.

Yes my phone screen doesn't turn on sometimes either. It probably happens to me about 3 or 4 times a week I'd say. It's pretty frustrating. I just hold the home button and the lock button until it resets/reboots and it works fine after that.
