Iphone 3G - How S L O W is the UI!!

Is it just me or is the UI on the 3G iphone s l o w ???

General iphone navigation (settings/txt/mail) it seems to take ages to move between programs/address lookups...

Is this a 'push/pull' issue ?

Anyone else experiencing slow UI?

i've noticed if im flipping through alot of different apps the texting is slow or m contacts book pulls up slowly... so...

besides that the phone is very snappy and i love it.

one thing i do from time to time, is power down the phone, and power it back on...

or if the texting gets slow or "laggy" then i push the home button and go back into the text message, and it is normal and snappy again

I notice a little lag sometimes too, when I am in my contacts or something but I find that its just a small lag usually.

You gotta remember, iPhones are basically tiny computers, I think a little lag is perfectly fine, keep in mind the iPhones are working there ass off all day updating and stuff,

I would think that apple will probably put in a patch that will help with the lag

but for a short answer, yes I notice it and no it really doesn't bother me too much

I think the UI is fairly robust. Every now and then I notice a lag between when I hit a button and the ultimate response, but not too bad. I should caveat this by saying I'm coming from a Windows Mobile device, which was just a damn joke in terms of how slow the UI was.

I am getting worried that there isnt much talk about the lag. I am not sure now if this lag is widespread. for me it lags once and awhile when i am typing and its terribly annoying and when i open my phone book of only around 70 contacts it lags 9 out of 10 times.

how many ppl are experiencing this, can we do a poll?

Slide to Unlock - Lags between slide and passcode.
Address Book - Lags between pressing search and appearance of keyboard.

I'm turning off 3G and Location Services to seek how this travels.

Even someone at work agrees of lag, especially the contacts. She asked if updating the firmware helped, which I said it might help a few things, but not contacts. Her list is pretty large, and I witnessed her opening contacts and it would not respond to any input for a few seconds.

I also don't like how the slide to unlock often pauses and gets stuck.

Overall, I have hope some update will come out soon to fix all the glitches and make the interface as smooth as it was or advertised.

I am also a little frustrated with the lag of the iphone 3G. I used my 1st Gen iphone for a year and was quite acustomed to the quick UI. I Really hope that the 2.0.1 software addresses these issues. I find my contacts and my typing are the most frustrating.

iPhone 2.0 June 19, 2008 boot time: 78 seconds

Now my iPhone 3g has terrible battery life and performance. I kinda wanted the app store. 3g and gps were a big plus, but I didn't expect them until the end of this year. I wish they had just waited and done everything right. Especially MobileMe. Now every time I check MM on my iPhone mail app it crashes back to the home screen. WHY??

I couldn't even imagine being able to use a front-facing camera for video iChat at this point. That would blow up everything.

Experiencing the Lag here as well

I'm seeing the lag in the same places, contacts, SMS, adding info to a current contact. I'm also seeing it when I click on some text input boxes on web pages. But like some are saying it's a small computer and I too can foresee Apple getting out an update shortly.

well, although Mobile Me started working for me about 3 days ago, I still suffer from UI lag. That even affects settings and taking pics with the built in camera. The lag is sometimes up to 6 seconds, that's ages if you are trying to take a snapshot.

Therefore I think it's a software problem and (at least)not solely related to MobileMe.

its the software

its not your 3G iPhone that is the problem. its all of the bugs in the 2.0 software, because i currently own the origonal iPhone, but 2.0 w/ the update.

before the update there was no problem, after the update i havent found a day where the phone hasnt reset its self less than 3x a day. just about all of the app lag, but more annoying is the lag during typing (either online, email, or just a note).

hopefully the 2.0.1 buzz is true. and this will fix the lag problems and the reseting issues

as komiothebeat suggested a reboot is always useful to clear out any bits of application left over in memory, a bit frustrating that it needs to be done, but its a far cry better than anything running windows mobile.

Also when closing out of apps that have large scrolling blocks, eg contacts or emails or sms, holding down the 'home' key (rather than a quick tap) for at least ten seconds force closes the application and appears to clear out the memory associated with the app.

This can be done for any open application, but the wait time does become cumbersome after a while.

Have found this to be quite useful, especially for lagging contact listings.

It's a matter of expectations, I guess. Relative to every other device I've ever used before, I would not call the 3g iphone "marginal at best." Maybe you just use yours differently but I've already downloaded 5 apps and swap between them seamlessly. If anything, I've been POSITIVELY surprised at how well the phone is able to perform given everything it does. But like I said in my original post (if you read the whole thing), I'm coming from a Windows Mobile device so the relative comparison is pretty easy.

Probably because you are a troll, it can be read from your signature. You are a troll like a crazy fanboy, just the opposite.

iPhone (including 2.0 software) is an amazing product, but yes there are problems. I can't use anything after have tried iPhone for more than few months. I really can't.... so i can live with a little lag and slow contacts, especially because i'm sure Apple will fix it.

I sat last night comparing my girlfriend's 1.1.4 and my 2.0 and hers is much faster than mine in everything it does. I was longing for the appstore, but not at the expense of the entire UI! The beauty of the iphone is its fluid, fast interface. If you have to wait for everything and constantly see blank pages before things load, it really isn't a good UI. I've tried restoring the 2.0 software and it didn't help at all. So yes, it's very slow! Hope Apple fixes it, but until then I'm going to try (again) to downgrade to 1.1.4. I tried yesterday but it didn't work - does anybody have any suggestions?

I find going into settings to be painfully slow, from clicking on settings takes about 10seconds for anything to show up, then clicking into individual settings takes 3-5seconds.. exiting to the home screen is the same too.

I'm sure there will be many updates to come very soon though, so just live in hope

Someone at work finally updated her original iPhone and someone told her to check contacts, which she then noticed immediately that issue, among other things.

I hope they fix this soon.

Just throw me onto the list of angry customers who had a perfectly good iPhone that got f-ed with 2.0. Maybe if we bitch enough, Apple will come out with a fix. I've successfully disuaded two people from buying an iPhone and will continue my recommendation until Apple does right by its customers! At least give me the f-cking option to downgrade. My g/f has my old 8gb that was a hand-me-down after I upgraded to the 16gb. She wisely hasn't upgraded, and I am oh so jealous....I want 1.1.4 back!

Besides, after a week, I'm already getting bored with the apps and will gladly give them up if it means a stable phone...

It goes sluggish if you have loads of apps open.
Go into apps and hold the home button to force quit the apps.
This is the workaround until 2.0.1

my iPhone OFTEN lags, especially after opening several apps. The worst thing is when it just restarts itself. Today I was saving a store's phone number and I was trying to take a pic of the store front as the contact pic>>>> my iPhone screen froze when iPhone was saving the pic and I had to restart it.

other than the time when I need to search a number from my contacts urgently, iPhone's lagging problem doesn't bother me too much....but I really hope that Apple can make iPhone MUCH more stable. (I always feel that my iPhone is gonna restart itself anytime without notice).

Glad I'm not the only one

The new iPhone software definitely creates a lot of lags between things for me. It's especially annoying when you're typing and the keyboard basically stops responding for a few seconds. Opening the phone book makes me think the thing has locked up, and I only keep 51 contacts on it. I keep hoping for an update because this thing is no longer a pleasure to use. Other bugs also get to me: Right now, my iPhone insists I'm still in a Pennsylvania when I actually left three days ago. Rebooting doesn't even fix it.

PLEASE APPLE -- no more features until you can get this software working correctly.
