iPhone iPhone 3G jailbreak and iOS update

Hey everyone,
i have an old iPhone 3G that i want to give to my friend. it's jailbroken and unlocked on iOS 3.1.2. i want to update it to 4.2 and completely wipe everything off it. can anyone help with that ? there's a bunch of unlock and jailbreak stuff out there but i can't figure out which to use and in what order. thank you!

Connect to iTunes and hit restore. If you have the iPad baseband on it, you'll need a custom firmware.

If i hit restore my phone will lock again. then what ?

Before anyone can answer this, what baseband is on it.
Is it unlocked ? If so, by what method.

I don't know how it was unlocked, when i got it it was already done.
how do I check the baseband ?

Settings > General > About > Scroll to modem firmware (baseband)

Looks like an Ultrasn0w unlock.

Honestly, doing an upgrade and preserving the unlockable baseband takes some knowledge of iPhone jail breaking.

Based on your responses here, I would encourage you not to try it on your own.
