If i am to jailbreak the phone (i am on legit o2 contract for iphone) will i risk bricking it, and if bricking does occur, will i be able to restore it or manage to get it working again??

The unfortunate thing about a community forum is that you may have a legitimate question, and while searching for an answer, you may encounter someone who, although they know the answer, they simply give a smartass comment, and tell you to read elsewhere, before moving on.
Another unfortunate thing about a community forum is that no matter how friendly you try to be, it does, in fact, get repetitive to keep answering the same questions over and over again. This crosses many people over to the darkside of smartassedness.
However, you may be still be fortunate enough to get an honest, straight-forward answer, from someone that happens to have a little patience.
I'll try to be that person for you this once.
Simply put, "bricking" your phone is a myth. The worse thing that is ever likely to happen is that you may have to restore it again at some point.
In the future, please do try to search for the answer in the forum, before posting it and becoming the 1,000th person to ask such a question.
I would really like to see less people here becoming smartasses with nothing constructive to say, and if more people would simply look for the answer to their question, before asking it in a new thread, there will be less incentive for these smartasses to propagate.

although it used to not be. thats my concern with my iphone as i remember reading about bricked iphones back in the day.
have the processes become "safe" now for sure? also what do you reccomend, pwnage tool or quickpwn
As long as you are using software that has been release by the Dev Team (PwnageTool, QuickPwn), you won't brick your phone.
The guys on the Dev Team, however... Well, they're going WAY beyond just jailbreaking their phones, and in that territory, all bets are off.

The easiest method is QuickPwn, but in some cases, for some people, PwnageTool makes sense.
If you have no desire to build a custom ipsw, then by all means, use QuickPwn.

no there isnt. you have to restore.

i have been jailbreaking since the very beginning (sept of 07). out of all the forums i have been on i think i have heard of maby 2 cases. 1 for sure but i dont think there have been anymore. its extremely rare
Nothing too serious, Steve Jobs just occasionally comes by to declare your firstborn his for the next family bbq, but other than that, it's not bad.
Seriously, I've never actually seen a true case of a bricking recently that a full restore hasn't been able to fix. I'd recommend quickpwn, do a forum search for a huge thread on the matter.
