Hi,

So I have a new iPhone 3G. Im in the UK and I bought a pay as you go iPhone and have put a contract sim card in the phone (the phone is NOT unlocked or jailbroken). I have already disabled 3G and data roaming in the settings.

I do not have free internet on my contract so whenever I go to the net it charges me.

I have been using my home and university network wifi and this is supposed to be free right? But I am still being charged from what I can see is most if not all of the time when I go online on my iPhone 3G.

Please help.

Thanks.

Why buy a PAYG iPhone 3G and then use an O2 contract SIM? Surely you'd have saved money by buying it on contract/upgrading to it on your existing contract?

Anyway, you need to disable cellular data: Settings - General - Network - Cellular Data Network - then change the APN. Easiest just to add a couple of dots after it, then it's easy to set it back if you need to in the future.

PS you don't need to disable 3G.

Thanks for the info.

As for why I didn't get the iPhone on contract is because I just got the HTC Touch HD on contract for £30 a month. I then sold the HTC Touch HD on eBay for £490. The total cost of the 18month contract I just took out is 30*18 = 540 - 490 = £50.

So I get 1200mins and 500texts for £50 i.e. 50/18 = £2.70 a month.

Then I just an iPhone 3G for £340 from Apple. So total cost of iPhone + contract = £390.

That is at least £300-£400 cheaper then the cheapest iPhone contract :)

Thanks again for the info ill try it out now :)

No problem
It's really handy having mobile internet access, certainly one of the selling points of having an iPhone. However if you can live without it then great. I think you can always add it as a bolt-on.

Well I tried it and it works :D

As for mobile internet access, most of the time I will either be at home or at uni and both places have wifi access so mobile net isnt a must for me. As you mentioned there is a bolt on for unlimited mobile net access and thats an extra £7.50 a month.

As for now im happy with my free wifi being free
