I know if I unlock my iphone and use it with tmobile, 3g will not work because it uses a different frequency then att... But i was wondering if that was a hardware thing or could that ever be changed with software?

It's a hardware thing -- Apple could in principle easily make an iPhone 3G for that frequency, but not via a software update or crack.... I will be really curious in the long run to see if T-Mobile can remain competitive in 3G with this data spectrum few other carriers internationally use, and the need for a different handset variant than everyone else.
