iphone 3g possibly bricked? 3.1 update

Ok well i updated my moms iphone (3g) which is not jailbroken or unlocked.
updated it to 3.1 and also updated to itunes 9.0.

after doing that, mother noticed wifi signal wasnt working on the 3.1 updated iphone.. so i went to restore the iphone and it gave me errors. so i turned the phone back on and it either goes to emergency call screen or it goes to "connect wire to itunes".
so basically now she cant use the phone and is pissed off.

ive tried downgrading and restoring on itunes 9 neither are working all give me errors near the end of the process

can anyone help me to get it to work?

im thinking of getting itunes 8.2 back and trying to downgrade 3.1 to 3.0 from there.

It seems your only chance is to try and re-install the 3.1 update. It isn't easy to go back to 3.0.1, and there are lots of people trying. Try reinstalling and setting the phone up as a new phone, and then re-syncing all the apps and contacts etc back, and then you might have a better chance of a clean install.
