Gizmodo did a comparison between the cost of the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 2G and a handful of other similar smart phones. I completely agree with their conclusion that the $160 extra over 2 years is well worth the extra speed and capabilities of the 3G iPhone, and that it is pretty much on-par with its competitors. I'm sick of hearing people complain. Yes, I know there are Sprint plans like the Sero for cheaper, but in general it's not just the iPhone that is a rip-off, its everyPhone.

Over two years, the iPhone 3G will cost $160 more over the original iPhone. This includes the unlimited data plan plus the additional $5 SMS plan you need to get to match the original's 200 included messages. What the chart doesn't indicate, in pure dollars, is how much 3G is worth.

Compared to a similar 3G phone on AT&T, the iPhone 3G costs exactly the same over two years as AT&T's HTC Tilt (minus $100 for the increased initial phone price). Compared to Sprint, you're coming out slightly behind by $20 because of Sprint's included unlimited SMS/MMS, but unlimited 3G data still costs the same $30. Verizon's data and texting plan is also on par with AT&T's, and you get an extra 50 text messages.

Shouldn't the cheapest 3g plan include 200 texts anyways? Thats what the cheapest original plan included.

I think so. That's the only part of the plan I don't like. I can live with the extra $10/month. It atleast makes sense. But it really should include texts.

Wasn't there a thread here earlier where the OP asked AT&T about the SMS and they said the price included 200 just like the original plan?

At&T does not have 3g coverage like verizon or sprint. Watch people get shocked when they realize they are still connecting to edge but paying for 3g speeds.

It is possible, but since it contradicts every other report on here (well almost...) i have my doubts...

why did they have to remove the text? Thats my only complain really.
Same here mate...

Which is why people should read up on everytihng. But they won't. But still, they are paying so that AT&T can build there 3G network, and support it. It makes sense, but it really is ashame, and I would be very pissed about this, however I have 3G by me...I think...

Too bad ATTWS doesn't have an easily-reachable customer service email address or online support form to fill out. I would have linked it.

They do have their own forums for tech support if complaints want to be directly posted. I doubt anyone from ATT will care to read our concerns on here!

all 3G have a standard for $30 though. TO tell you the truth Getting that plan would still be cheaper then what my family pays for a normal service!!!!

The website has a chat that pops up when you are in the shopping part... call any AT&T store and I'm sure that they will tell you as much information as they were given. I work as a Retail Sales Associate in a corporate store. I'm hopefully going to be posting a lot more as July 11th approaches. Due to the limited information that the sales reps and even VPs of sales have, it's kinda hard to tell any new developments until they are announced. So hold on to your breeches and there will be more info to come.

All DATA plans on PDA phones are $30 regardless of the phone or speed of the network. The Centro from palm and currently all the Blackberrys have the $30 plan for data even though they are only on EDGE. Regardless of what PDA phone you have it has to have a better connection to the towers so the data costs more b/c of its constant connection. As for why AT&T decided to up the iPhone 3G one... my guess is because iPhone 3G is subsidized they do have to recoup the money they are forking over somewhere...
