It seems that if I hold the iPhone in one (left) hand, so that the palm kind of "cups" right below the speaker, it seems to be much louder and more pronounced than if I hold it without my hand there (ie. typing with both hands, nothing below speaker). The difference is very clear, the "clicks" when typing, for example, come out much "brighter" and crisper with my hand there. Without it, the sounds seem dull and hollow.

I guess my question is, could some of you please try this out and see if it makes a difference on your phones or if there's something wrong with my phone in particular?

When you cup your hand, the sound bounces off your hand towards you.

The way you hold the iPhone can effect the sound. When I play Crash sometimes my hand would cover the speaker and it almost loses all sound. Also, if I point the speaker directly at me sounds louder than if I'm looking at the screen and the speaker is pointed to the side.

I understand why it happens, and I also understand that covering the speaker basically makes it useless, I just want to know if the cupping thing is supposed to make that much of a difference. I never noticed an effect like that with the original iPhone and I just want to know if this is due to the iphone redesign or if my unit is defective/out of spec. I want people to try it and tell me if they notice a such a large difference or not.

The cupping has nothing to do with the phone, it's simple physics. You're directing sound waves toward your ear. Whether it's supposed to make a difference, what's a very confusing question.
