Maybe some one can shed some light ... So my question is, does the iphone 3G look for a certain type of usb connection before deciding to charge, ie does itunes need to be installed? or what is going on??

I have a new iPhone 3G, when i plug it into my macs (3) it will charge fine, when i use the wall charger (5v adapter) it works fine. Charges fine on the kaboom (stereo) as well.

However

When i plug it into the work PC it wont charge ( windows 2000/no itunes ... ? ) when i plug it into my usb hub (when not plugged into the mac) it wont charge, but it has power because my ovatel usb modem will boot. I have an inverter with a usb port for powering usb devices, it wont work either.

Any ideas?

The iPhone 3G requires more power than the standard available of USB. USB 2 defines an optional spec to allow devices to request (and receive) more power. If the device does not support this, or for some reason says no to the request for more power, it won't charge.

um...

Non-powered USB ports on the PC and improper power on the usb hub.

You're welcome.

LOL ok

so when i plug the iphoen into the pc it asks to install drivers, i say no so then it doesnt do anything. I assume the iphone actually needs to be installed to charge?

The usb hub is powered, and as soon as i plug it into my mac the iphone starts charging.

So the iphone must be looking for a specific connection to start charging as it wont seem to work on a generic usb port?

Not all hubs are created equal. Read my post above: you need one that implements the optional part of the spec to provide additional power.

I don't believe you were really laugh out loud.

Anyway reread his post.

3g iPhone USB charging issues

I had my iPhone refuse to take a charge from the OE cord and wall cube, then finally it took a charge when I plugged it into my xp laptop. It has since started to take a charge where ever i plug it into.
To try to fix this I turned off the phone and back on. But it only was fixed after plugging it into my laptop.
