iphone 3G - Using bluetooth.... advice needed pls

Hi,
I've just got myself a new iphone 3G, and can't operate the Bluetooth:
I go to SETTINGS, then GENERAL, then BLUETOOTH and switch it 'ON'. It says now discoverable and it also says "searching devices....", but it can't detect my MacBook (even though that's discoverable and 'on') and vice versa, nothing can detect my iphone, not even another phone.
Am I doing something wrong?

i had the same problem until i actually read the poor excuse for an instruction manual that came with the iphone...

the bluetooth on the iphone is not data bluetooth meaning you can only connect to devices such as headsets/earpieces etc.

the reason for this (i think) is so you cant just exchange music files, apps, films etc with friends so they can keep copyright laws and stuff all in check...

someone please correct me if im wrong!

there are a couple of solutions if you want to store files on your iPhone
search for TouchFS on the AppStore - that's the easiest to use as it's just the one app on your iPhone that pretty much runs a fileserver - downside is you have to keep the app open on your file to keep the drive mounted on your computer - i expect if someone phones in the middle of your transfering a file, it'll stop the file transfer.

there's also FileMagnet - but you need to install the FileMagnet app on your mac too (i think there is not a pc version yet)

edit: sorry - i meant to add that both of these items just store the docs within their own area. i'm pretty sure that you can't upload a file with FileMagnet and then read it with TouchFS - and also you can't get to other files on the iPhone, like the system files to change the txt msg alerts, for example. to do that, you'll need to hack it
