Which one should I get? I used to have the 3G, and was pretty happy with it... will it make much of a difference, in terms of speed?

If you can justify spending the extra money to get a 3GS, do it, but honestly, I'd wait out till WWDC at the end of June, new iPhone, probable new iPhone OS too. Should be a nice bump to what's out at the moment. Worth holding off for.

What do you have now? Will you be upgrade-eligible on or around the time the new one is rumored to be released? If you're not in desperate need of a new smartphone right now, it might be a good idea to wait. :)

Otherwise, yes, IMO there's a huge difference in speed between the 3G and 3GS. My brother has the former and I have the latter (jailbroken) and I was astonished that the difference was that marked. The main place where the speed differential showed up when I used both was in trying to use Google Maps and drive (I was a passenger, not the driver), following their directions. There were times when I wasn't sure if the 3G would be able to give me the next step before we'd passed it, especially if a recalculation was necessary. With my 3GS, I never have that concern.

Yes, I am in desperate need of a smart phone :D Tomorrow is when I am upgrade eligible again, so I can buy the iPhone at the discounted price. I cannot stand another week of living without one... I guess I'll be going for the 3GS 16GB, since I only have 3 GB of music (not counting videos, which I can live without). The only thing I am waiting for until June is the MBP...

If you really want to get it now, go for the best. 32GB it. That way, the resell value is considerably higher when you want to get the new iPhone.

This. Doesn't seem to matter what the capacity or what your current library size is, there are always things out there that'll fill it up faster than you'd think. The added resale value's worth it as well.

This thread is like a year late. There's no point upgrading if you have waited this long, might as well cross your fingers and wait for July update.
