I've done some searching around but can't find this specific problem...

Problem:
Whenever I plug my iPhone into my MacBook (10.4.9), iTunes will start up, load library, detect the iPhone, then immediately crash. The crash reporter will come up, ask if I want to reopen, which never works. If I open iTunes without the iPhone attached, everything's fine. Once I plug in the iPhone, as soon as iTunes starts to detect it, it crashes. The iPhone does not show in Finder and does not charge.

Possible Cause:
Unknown. This started seemingly out of nowhere; the only changes would have been updating to 2.0.2 and installing some App Store applications on the iPhone.

Attempted Fixes:
1) Uninstalled/reinstalled latest version of iTunes 7 (haven't tried 8 yet) - uninstallation included removing all preference files, etc;
2) Uninstalled latest version of iTunes 7 and reverted to previous version of 7;
3) Soft reset of iPhone;
4) Uninstalled most App Store apps, including all new installations;
5) Synched iPhone on an iMac running Leopard (no problems);
6) Tried different USB cables (coincidentally found that the iPhone won't charge with most aftermarket or Apple-branded iPod USB cables); and
7) Swearing, cursing, smacking my MacBook, iTunes, and my iPhone.

Any thoughts? I'm getting pretty frustrated, since I can't sync, update, charge, or do anything on my iPhone from my MacBook now.

Thanks in advance.

Fixed

Tried iTunes 8 and still no go, then tried resetting all settings, still no luck.

Then I came across this thread (I had EXC_BAD_ACCESS and KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS showing up in the iTunes crash log)...
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/288513/

Went to my Library > iTunes > iTunes Plug-ins folder, deleted AudioScrobbler.bundle (the Last.FM plugin) and all is well.

I believe the problem coincides with a Last.FM update, but not completely sure. Could be the iPhone update caused the conflict too, I guess.

Anyway, if you're having the same problem... Look at deleting AudioScrobbler.bundle.

Just goes to show that Software and Testing are not Perfect

So the question is, why isn't Mac software perfect? The same unrealistic expectation that people rip Microsoft for all the time "perfection in software" which I can tell you software manufaturers in general aren't out to "get you". There are bugs and some you can't always detect no matter how much you test until they appear.

The point is, software is complex. Testing is not perfect, and a lot of times, development is rushed. Go figure. That happens to everyone, Google, MS, and Apple as we are seeing.
