im about to buy a iphone 3g my main question is that the phone im buying is from a friend never been jailbroken or unlocked, right now its on the latest firmware the one before 3.0 he wants to updgrade to 3.0 should i tell him not to , he wants to because he wants to see the features before he gets the gs iphone??????

The 3GS won't be unlocked for... I'll say a month and a half after release. It'll be August before he can even use it.

no Im getting his iphone 3g he is already on att and is getting new gs so hes not hacking i am...

Oh, I see!

So he's getting a 3GS and staying on AT&T, and you'll get his 3G and be on T-Mobile, right?

Okay, I can imagine that the Dev Team will unlock 3.0 for the 2G and 3G long before a 3GS unlock, but they haven't yet, so if you want to use your iPhone straight away, you'll want to be at 2.2 (not 2.2.1; they didn't bother with that because of the proximity of 3.0). 2.2 on the 3G is, to the best of my knowledge, unlockable.

OP, you mentioned that he updated the phone to the one before 3.0, which is 2.2.1, which isn't unlockable. It may be too late, you can try to downgrade the baseband, but it's a slim chance it will work.

Anyway, the 3G S will take much longer to Unlock/Jailbreak than a month and a half. It took nearly 6 months to unlock the 3G, and the 3G S includes new hardware that the Dev team is speculating will be nearly impossible to hack.

Did it take that long? Sorry; time flies when you have memory loss...

Key word: nearly.

It is never impossible. I'll say... eight months, then, if the Dev Team thinks it's hard.

I did some digging to make the same decision, and my conclusion is that you have to be careful to get a used iPhone with the proper firmware if you want to unlock it and use it right away.

Otherwise, expect to use it as a fancy iPod Touch until the next firmware and 3.0 is hacked.

so its pointless to buy his iphone 3g then..

Try downgrading the baseband, like he said, and if that works, you can try a downgrade to 2.2. If THAT works, it's unlockable.

Open question: Hey, what about a simple TurboSIM?

by downgrading the baseband would this cause any damage if it does not work....and what software would u prefer to attempt to unlock phone..

For unlocking, there is only one: PwnageTool.

Anything else from any other company is a fraud and not to be trusted.

PwnageTool has two subsidiaries: QuickPwn (PwnageTool For Dummies™) and WinPwn (Windows version).

I have a RebelSIM, TurboSIM, Gevey 3G SIM, TheMott, and Moogle SIM thing. None of them have worked. They cycle from "No Sim Card" to "Searching" without keeping service for more than a minute or two. Maybe it's just me. I have heard success stories from other people with them.
When you downgrade the baseband, you can stay on 2.2.1.
See, I have the 2.28.00 baseband on 2.2.1:

so has anybody here ever unlocked a 2.2.1 firmware phone

It's Craigslist. He's a liar. benflick has already said the that hardware solutions don't even work.

Right. That was just me, though, I tried it on T-Mobile and my carrier (Cincinnati Bell), and have found none of them to work. The Mott one and the Moogle one claim to work on 3.0. I tried both of them, and I can say that they don't work. Save your $60 for something else.

I have unlocked two iphone 3g phones with 2.2.1 software. It was fairly easy and just took some research. First of all, there are two different iphone 3g phones. I'm not exactly sure what the date was that they changed the baseband. The baseband is the limiting factor here. Both of mine were purchased on the launch date of last year, so they were capable of being unlocked. The general steps to doing so are: Jailbrake->Baseband downgrade->unlock with YellowsnOw. I had the baseband 2.30 and you have to downgrade to 2.28.

Here are the 3 tutorials I followed and it worked fine:

1st: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/yt-4YYnFRCTwJU/how_to_jailbreak_and_unlock_2_2_1_iphone_or_ipod_touch/

2nd: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=3977

3rd: http://www.macgeekblog.com/blog/archive/2009/01/01/iphone-3g-unlock-tutorial-with-yellow-snow.html

Follow those 3 steps and you should be golden, IF YOU HAVE THE FIRST IPHONE BASEBAND.

The easiest route for most would be the SIM card adapter. All you would need to really do then, is jailbreak the phone, and put your SIM in. With the adapters, you would also be more prepared for iPhone OS 3.0, if your SIM Supports the software upgrade...but wait for instructions from the manufacturer first.

I'm here to tell you the turbo sim works fine for me..... whenever it says no sim you have to remove the sim card and put it in another phone, make a call and browse the internet for a minute. then put the sim card back in the iphone and it works. I have been using the turbo sim for about 3 months
