I want to preface by saying that I did already search the forums and was unable to get an answer.

I have an iPhone 3G I purchased back in Dec and recently the silent switch fell off. On that top of that, my calls have been dropping like crazy. I took it to the genius bar and the guy ran a diagnostics on my phone and told me that my phone was indeed dropping calls and he would swap it with another iPhone 3G 16GB. Since they were swapping out my phone, I was hoping I could pay them to upgrade to the 3GS. Has anyone managed successfully to do this? Or do you think they will eventually run out of stock on the 3G 16GB and just start giving out 3GS's at one point?

Not going to happen, they'll have plenty of refurbished stock 3G's well into the distant future. You bought a 3G they'll replace it with a 3G.

As mentioned above it will not happen...

I'm on my 7th replacement 3G (don't be alarmed I have a unique situation with the apple activation server that is causing problems, only 2 were because of build quality)....

With all the problems I have been through and the hours I've spent on the Phone with apple and in the apple store I can't even get them to give me a reduction on the price of out-of-contract 3GS...

Thanks for the response guys. Guess I am stuck with this 3G for a while.....

Not neccassirly. When you get your replacment 3g, it should still have plastic on it and should look like a brand new phone.....

Why this helps is that i was in your position not to long ago.... about a month

What i did was unlocked it and threw it up on ebay, advertising it as an iphone 3g still with platic, Unlocked. Granted, i am very good with ebay and listing stuff, but i ended up making 500 off it, more then enough to cover my early upgrade to the 3g. You can easliy sell them on ebay for 350 no problem, and if u want a quick sale you can list it as a buy it now and then just pay the 100 dollar diffrence or so

Even Original iPhones

I had my Original iPhone 8GB swapped 1 month ago. Its a refurbished, but looks, feels and acts brand new. This is the iPhone that came out in June 2007, the first iPhone and was discontinued over a year ago. I was at the Apple Store the other day, and a person got their 4GB Original iPhone swapped for a replacement.

When you say they got swapped for a replacement, are you talking about it being replaced with another 4GB or did the Apple Store give that person an upgrade?
