I've always unlocked/jailbroken my iPhones until I upgraded to the 3GS.

I've updated my 3GS to 3.1 software and now i'm wanting to jailbreak (i'm not so bothered about unlocking) - I want to jailbreak as I want to make the spotify application run in the background.

I've read a few conflicting reports here and there that suggest i'm not going to be able to jailbreak - is this true?

Is there a way I jailbreak right now? If so - how?

Am I going to be able to jailbreak in the future or am I stuffed?

I'm sorry if this questions have been asked before - I was getting myself even more confused by trying to read/search for other posts. Many thanks. :)

Saurik (AKA Mr Cydia) is supposed to posting a method to downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0.1 today. Currently there is no jailbreak for 3.1, but stay tuned as patience is a virtue for us JB'rs unless we can make something ourselves. :D

So once I downgrade to 3.0.1 I can jailbreak and my phone will still work?

Which method do I use to jailbreak after that? I was jailbreaking back when all the software was different and don't know anything about the new methods.

Just picked up a 3GS and the damn thing automatically updated to 3.1 ... Do you guys anticipate a jailbreak for 3.1 within the next month or so?

Or do you think I would be better off paying the 10% restocking fee and picking up another 3GS that hopefully has 3.0.1 (or earlier)?

I'm a pretty patient person, so waiting for a 3GS jailbreak for 3.1 isn't a problem. But the more I read, I didn't capture the ECID/iBEC/etc, so if I am stuck without a jailbreak forever, I could be seriously bummed out :(

The OS doesn't automatically update. You clicked to authorize it, or it came with 3.1.

Nobody really knows about the prospects for a jailbreak sans certificates. Chronicdevteam claims they will have a 3.1 jailbreak (but not unlock) soon. Dev-Team is focussing on developing a tool to allow upgrade to 3.1 without upgrading the baseband (and losing the possibility of unlock).

Supposedly if you buy from Apple they're updating the phones to 3.1 before they leave the store. I've heard mixed reports of AT&T doing the same. It has something to do with not being able to verify the 3.0.x software on a new device now that the firmware is no longer signed and forcing an upgrade to 3.1.

I restored my original iphone from 3.1 to 3.0.1 yesterday. You can try it on your 3gs if interested. Download 3.0.1 to your desktop then; if using a pc press shift and then right click on "Update" you can then double click on the 3.0.1 firmware and it is then restored. For mac instead of "shift" key hold down options while "right clicking" on update with your iphone plugged in to itunes.

That is not going to work on a 3GS.
