Does anyone else think Apple will retire the 3G this summer and replace it with an 8GB 3GS for the same price?

Seems plausible, especially since the 3G can't handle the new features such as multitasking.

What are your thoughts?

Certainly hope so. I'm thinking of upgrading to either the 3GS or the unannounced one this summer.

I'm sure the 3G will be "retired" and the current 3Gs may be the new low end model.

In the UK, the current iPhone 3G devices will ship within 24 hours. What do they do with surplus stock?

How soon do you think it will be before the 3GS price drops? I'm itching to finally upgrade to an iPhone.

Warranty replacements?

Genius Bars can still replace U2 edition iPods, so I'd guess they'll be replacing 3Gs for a few more years down the road...

That doesn't make total sense becuase Apple would have provided 2Gs for warrenty replacement post 3G launch.

The 16GB 3GS will be probably be the new low-end model, like the current 8GB 3G is now, once the new iPhone comes out. The new iPhone will probably come in 32GB and 64GB.

Not what I was told by Apple UK :(
They said I would need to pay for a new iPhone 3G

Well in December 2009, I got my Original iPhone swapped out. I went there last month to get my 3GS swapped out. A customer was receiving a replacement Original iPhone. This was in March 2010. If you Original iPhone is under warranty, they MUST replace it or RAPAIR IT. If you are under warranty, they must make the phone work again. If the Genius is not help, ploitly talk to the Store manger. If you get no where, call Apple and explain the problem. They will be more willing to resolve the issue.

I'm hoping the 'new as-yet-unannoucned' iPhone with come in 128GB and 64GB flavours. And then they keep either just the 32GB 3GS or both the 16GB and 32 GB 3GS as the new low end versions. Anyone agree that this would make more sense?

The new iPhone will not have 128GB capacity, as the company that Apple uses just released 64GB chips a few months ago. The new iPod Touch may be 128GB, but not the iPhone, since they need that extra spot for the cellular chipset.

Thank you for that, completely getting it mixed up with the Touch there! There my hopes for the new Touch's in September!

I doubt they will make a 128 GB iPhone.

I'm just curious as to whether Apple will keep both black and white versions of the 16GB 3GS as the base model, or maybe do away with the white one and just keep the black?

Already cleared the first point up. But regarding your second point they better keep the White one! Much prefer it over the black version!

The low-end model will become the $99 iPhone 3Gs 16 GB. iPhone 4G with 32 GB for $199 and 64 GB for $299. Haleluja.

I don't know if I can see them making the 3GS only $99.

I think it will go like this:

iPhone 3GS 16GB: $149
iPhone HD 32 GB: $249
iPhone HD 64 GB: $349

Lets stop for a moment here. The original iPhone launched in June 2007 with 4GB, 8GB. Then in September 2007, the 4Gb was discontinued. The 8GB model was the only iPhone made until Feburary 2008. At that time they introduced a 16Gb iPhone, and 32GB iPod touch. This as because the iPhone had room for 1 flash memory chip, and the touch has the space for TWO. So Toshiba or Samsung released 16GB flash memory on ONE CHIP. Apple used two in the 32GB touch. In June 2008, they kept those models (8GB and 16GB) no change in capacity. Same went for iPod touch. it stayed the same (8GB, 16GB and 32GB) In 2009 Toshiba or samsung released 32GB on ONE CHIP. Thats why we have a 32GB iPhone. And because the iPod tuuch can hold 2 chips, it got 64GB. For a 64GB iPhone to happen, Apple is going to need for Toshiba or samsung to pack 64GB into one chip, OR change the PCB design to accommodate TWO 32GB chips.

Sad to think my iPhone will be outdated soon  but i strongly believe in Apple producing a 8GB 3Gs to make Users Upgrade or making the 16GB lower end

I doubt it. More likely the 16GB 3GS will be sold for $99 and the next model will be sold at $199 and $299 for 32GB and 64GB. If that's the case, seriously spend your money on at least the $199 model. If someone bought a 3G since the 3GS release, they have now saved just $100 and won't be able to use a lot of 4.0 features. It's such a small amount of money in the long haul considering you pay $70/month at least for a plan in the US.
