iphone 3Gs activation without update?

Hi Friends,
One of my friend bought me a iphone 3gs 3.1.2 from ebay in USA. I don't have any experience about iphones. It is brend new phone.Unlocked by software.
When he turned on the phone, it asked for activation.

Is it dangerous to activate it with itunes ? Maybe it can update the phone to 3.1.3 directly then I can loose the "unlock" and won't be able to use my carrier's simcard again?

If it won't be dangerous to activate it like that, do I have to use my own carrier simcard while activating or AT&T simcard?

Do I have to take a shsh record before activation?

Any other way to activate it?

if it is JB and unlocked

via software then yes you loose the JB and unlock via the update. with 3.1.3 there is no unlock for a 3GS if it is factory unlocked then you will not loose it by updating. this is why factory unlocked phones command more money. if the phone is from the us it is software unlocked. if it unlocked either way you should be able to pop a sim in and use AT&T or T-mobile you can backup your phone via itunes just don't install any updates/ look at the hack section of this forum for more info.

If its from the US it will need an AT&T simcard to activate.
Dont update to 3.1.3
Itunes will not automaticly update it unleck you click accept and update a few times and download the latest firmware.

Ok thank you very much for your kindly help. So I will talk to my friend to activate my phone with his AT&T card without update.

Can I check the firmware version and baseband before activation? I mean Can I access "about " menu without activation?

And one more question

Is it necessary to backup shsh record with cydia before activation?

I dont think you can do anything before activation.
