iPhone 3GS Battery

Just upgraded from 2G to the 3GS and can't remember if I am supposed to drain the new battery completely until it shuts down or just recharge as needed?

I just got a 3gs yesterday, June 19.. I have found so far
that battery life is actually crap. My 1st gen phone had
way better battery life. Right now, as I write this I have
15% battery left @ 5 hours 2 minutes. Supposedly the 3gs
should have better battery life.

I am hoping that after a couple of full charges and breaking
the battery in the life will get better.

Is that a fair comparison? Maybe turn off 3G and compare batteries between 1G and 3GS. The 3G drains batteries like crazy. My bar hardly moves all day if I turn it off.
