I decided to buy a new iPhone. Great news.

I call one of the biggest stores of the Apple’s local exclusive distributor.

- Can I buy an iPhone 3GS at your store?
- We do not have it in stock, but you can order it.
- When would I get it?
- At the moment, waiting period is appr. 4 months. Which is not that bad, because I know quite a few of our stores which already stopped taking orders for the new iPhone.

As 4 months seems quite a long time, I call one of the major retailer chains, which also distributes iPhones here in Belgium.

- Can I buy / order an iPhone?
- Yes you can.
- When would I get it?
- No slightest idea. We still haven’t got a single phone from Apple.

Third call to another chain.
Same answer as in the first one, except for the fact that they do get a very small amount of iPhones, but nevertheless the waiting period is also here close to indefinite.

And in the end I call a small Apple dealer nearby.

- Yes you can order an iPhone.
- And what’s about waiting period?
- At the moment, -- says this honest guy, -- we have a line of several hundreds orders. Per week we’re getting one or two iPhones. So do the math.

He also told me that the real waiting time at the Apple’s local exclusive distributor is 6-8 months.

The funny thing is that if I order an iPhone right now, -- and if I’ll be lucky -- I could receive one by the time the new generation will be announced and rolled out.

So it could be smarter for me to wait till this new generation and buy then a better iPhone.

But on second thoughts, with such amazing distribution I probably won’t get this new iPhone roughly until the coming of the newest generation -- and so on and so forth.

Does anyone have any idea what’s going on?

Is this a matter of a clumsy local operator not able to get his acts together? Could it be that this operator is slowing things down while lobbying right to lock the iPhone exclusively to their network (it’s still forbidden here, thank God)? Is this a matter of a wrong assessment of the market potential by Apple? Just global shortage? God’s special punishment of Belgium?

Does anybody know whether the situation will change to the better in the foreseeable future, I mean while I'm still alive?

If I where you I'd find an unlocked phone somewhere else and use that.

Post in the iPhone Hacks forum if you want to know if it's possible to buy any 3Gs w/o 3.1 and unlock it. I think so. If this is the case, you'll need to act fast to make sure it doesn't have 3.1.

One of the problems in such a case would be the lack of any warranty, — at least as I’ve heard from an Apple Store business sales rep. According to her (as lots of folks here in Belgium are searching for a way of getting an iPhone yet in this millennium), she gets tons of questions about a possibility of buying an iPhone abroad etc., and it seems that iPhone does not have a world-wide warranty (as the only Apple product), but its warranty is somehow limited / bound to the country it’s been bought in. I’m not sure whether that’s true, but I presume the rep has no reason to lie.

And here in Europe it’s quite an expensive toy to buy it without a warranty (675€ for the 32GB model).

She is not lying - Check out Apple's 1-year limited warranty document:
http://images.apple.com/legal/warranty/docs/iPhone_3GS_warranty.pdf

The first full paragraph of the third page (of the current revision as of September 14, 2009) says:
Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its authorized distributors originally sold the hardware product...

iPhone 3GS

Any progress on obtaining 3GS now? Would it be any easier to get one in Belgium now, I also see on ebay around $1000 as factory unlocked, is this a genuine product. Anyone with experience on this?
