Ok first bear with me as I am new to these forums. I can very easily come into an iphone 3gs for real cheap but Im on verizon so I cant use it. Is there a way for me to unlock and jailbreak this phone so I can use it as an ipod touch? If so can I access the app store and get full functionality out of wifi? Thank you so much for helping me.

Alright. I know someone is going to come up with "If you just want to use it as an iPod, why not just buy the iPod?" So I'm making your relevant statement bold italic.

Yes, there are tools to do so. The easiest is called "redsn0w". Note that you only need to do the "jailbreak" function, since you don't care about cell phone functionality at all. Unlocking is for using the cell phone functionality on a carrier other than AT&T. If you think you'll want to use it on T-Mobile, then you can go the extra step and unlock later; but unlocking is generally more trouble than just jailbreaking.

thanks for the quick response. I am familiar with jailbreaking as I have a second generation touch but this situation seems like a really cheap upgrade for me because the phone is faster has a camera and more storage. The only other question I have is updating firmware with it. Do i have to borrow someones sim card when updates come out for it?

I'm probably way off here, but does he even need to jailbreak it at all?
With no sim inserted do you not get all functionality bar phone/cell connection?
Of course I'm assuming WI-Fi works with no sim card?
Anyway, I'm probably talking nonsense or misunderstood the question.

He can't use the phone at all until it's (h)ac(k)tivated. It will be stuck at the emergency call only screen. Since he presumably doesn't have an official carrier SIM, he will need to jailbreak and hacktivate it.

OP: Please be aware: you cannot currently jailbreak an iPhone 3GS with the latest firmware (3.1.3), nor can you downgrade unless the phone has previously been jailbroken and has its ECID SHSH cached on saurik's server. Make sure that the phone has 3.1.2 or earlier firmware and do not upgrade until new jailbreaking tools are developed.
