I got a 3GS as a gift recently. However, the iPhone had a hardware problem where the reception was very bad, and most of the times, I had no reception at all. I contacted Apple and all and they gave me a series of steps to do. They didn't work so they said I should get it replaced.
The question now is, can I get it replaced by the new iPhone 4 when it comes out?

If it's within the return period maybe. But if they are just doing a swap it will be the same phone.

No. They replace model for model. They have plenty of backup stock. The only way you can exchange is if you are w/i your 30 day return period. Return ASAP. Buy the 4 in a couple of weeks.
