I am about to return from deployment and going to purchase an iPhone 3GS - my question is how large are the files of the video files (average)? How long can you record a video file?

Also, how much space does the GPS app take?

I'm trying to see if I can get by with a 16gig iPhone 3GS or if I'm going to need to plunk down the cash for a 32gig...

Please don't just reply, "just get the 32gig." At least answer the questions if you can first and if you like add your opinion - I appreciate it.

if you can get the 32GB

the bigger you can get the better off I have really worried about the size not that large really I'd say mine are around 100 gb but I it's pretty handy when you want to take a quick family video plus music. Bigger is always better! :D oh and welcome home and thank you Sir!

how long can you record video for? how large are the recording files generally?

I believe that video records (on average) at about 360 kilobytes/s and are capped at 2 gigs per video. Unless you plan on recording full length Hollywood films, I don't think video space will be an issue.

This is a rough estimate, but I've been seeing about 25 MB per minute of video.

So an hour of video would take up 1.5 GB.

That's when transferring over USB.

When you e-mail them they compress to a smaller size...again this is a guess, but about 1/4 or 1/5 of the original file size.

EDIT: RiceRacerDX's info comes to 1.2 GB per hour and my rough guess comes to 1.5 GB per hour, so it looks like our info is pretty similar. I think something around those 2 numbers is pretty likely.

if you don't have a answer

ok I just did a little checking my average file is about 1/2 mb per second I came up with about 60 minutes for a GB of space. only time limit is your battery life. there is lots of storage space on either device don't forget if you plan to get one of the GPS you will loose about 1 1/2 gb there too. hope I answered you better this time

I don't know about average, but my latest video had the following data rates:

Video Tracks:
H.264, 640 × 480, 15.006 fps, 3676 kbps

Audio Tracks:
MPEG-4 Audio mono, 44.1 kHz, 80 kbps

That's a combined bitrate of about 470 KB/s = 27.5 MB/min = 1.6 GB/hr.
