iPhone 3Gs vs Nexus One

Ok, so don't flame me. I'm looking for honest advice, hopefully no fanboy responses. I am confident I will get that. So here's my dilemma.

1. I'm on a family plan with my wife at AT&T. I have an iPhone 3GS, she has a Blackberry (no data). Moving to T-Mobile would save us $30/month and we'd pay less for us both to get data than if we both had data on AT&T. My contract runs out in June, hers next July. This without signing up a contract and using the month-to-month billing Even More Plus plan.

2. I am really liking the looks of the Nexus One. I like the notification system, widgets, background multitasking, oled screen, integration w/ google like Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Voice and maps navigation.

Now, the negative on the Nexus One is that the iPhone is a much superior media player. I listen to podcasts all the time and I know the Nexus One can do it, but it's not a contest in what device plays media better. I looked and all the apps on the iPhone that I need are on the Android. I have a ton of apps, but don't really use a lot of them.

So my thinking was get the Nexus One, be on AT&T Edge until my contract runs out and then go to T-Mobile. Or just pay the ETF and go to Tmobile since we'd be saving a lot with them month-to-month.

I was waiting for the 27th to see what Apple would do if anything to 4.0, but do you think it will ever be like Android? With folders and customization and widgets, etc? The thing is that when they come out with a new iPhone, I don't want to sign or extend a contract, so I wouldn't be getting it, just the OS update.

I was also thinking that I might get the iPad at some point and I'd still be in the iPhone OS if there was something critical app I did need.

Now I'm sure you all love your iPhones, but what advice do you have for me? What would you do?

I truly do not understand threads like these. What device works best for any individual is entirely a matter of personal preference and usage habits, something only he can know. You are asking strangers who know nothing about you to give you advice on something that is completely subjective and nearly as much a matter of taste as one's preferred flavor of ice cream. It makes no sense.

Obviously, my decision was to get an iPhone. It is the phone which best suits my needs, and is in my opinion the best cell phone on the market. I would not move to the Nexus 1 under any circumstances. But in what way does this information help you? It doesn't. And nobody else's will, either.

If you want an Android device, get an Android device; if you want an iPhone, get an iPhone. That's really all there is to say.

There's no telling what 4.0 will hold. It could be a major change, and it could be a dud like the 2.0 to 3.0 upgrade was.

In my opinion, Android 2.0 is a better OS than iPhone 3.x. I do miss a few things about my iPhone but overall the Droid has been a much more enjoyable experience for me. Don't like the stock media player in Android? Download a new one from the market. Don't like the stock browser, or upset it doesn't use pinch-to-zoom? Download a new one from the market that does and set it as your default.

Since no one has any concrete evidence on what to expect in 4.0, your guess is just as valid as anyone's here!

iPhone OS will never be Android. Two very different concepts, from two very different companies. As far as customization of a non-jailbroken iPhone, I wouldn't expect anything beyond the (unlikely) possibility of wallpaper.

I ordered my Nexus One today. I have been a big fan of the iPhone since it was released getting all the latest models but have finally just had enough of it. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is an incredible piece of Hardware but that's the thing - Hardware! I have also jailbroken my phones and finally after nothing substantial was released the other day I decided to give the N1 a go.

The bottom line is Apple has made and always will make the iPhone too restrictive. You pay that much for a phone, you should be able to do what you like. It works for some people, but if you like customisation then the iPhone is not for you and like you say, the apps you need are on Android anyway.

It's only a matter of time before Google catches up with the iPhone OS!

Someday that may be true. Problem is, that will then be the previous iPhone OS version and they will need to then chase the then current OS.

The heavy weight placed on "customization" still escapes me. After a while, the ability to clutter the screen gets old. Nice yes, enough to change phones, not for me. I do however see the value in the ability to control the notification process, whose level of customization is missing in the current iPhone OS.

Personally, I love my iPhone, but had I not bought my 3G back when it first came out... I'd be buying a Nexus One.

It's a cheaper plan... Does the same things I want the iPhone to do... It's just not Apple.

See there are two reasons here: 1-Tmobile plan would save us $30/month. 2-Notifications system is superior on Android in my opinion. As well as the whole iPhone OS, while the apps are great, seems a bit stale to me and with the iPad seemingly the same, I don't know if I see a massive UI or interface shift. Right?

There won't be a major UI change. The UI is selling like pancakes for Apple right now.

True! Or else why would the iPad have the same UI? It wouldn't make sense for Apple to release that then apply a complete revamp of the UI only a couple of months later. Problem is noone knows.

At the end of the day, they're two different products by two different vendors and it will come down to personal preference. If you dont have an iPhone you'll want one until you find something you can't do on it...
