Iphone 3gs will not restore

My Iphone 3gs will not restore. I recently updated to IOS 5.0 and phone has been a bit sluggish. About every other week i have been having to restore it because it keeps falling into recovery mode. The phone is not jailbroken and it is recognized in Itunes but when attemping to restore it, it says could not be restored an unknown error occurred (1). Can anyone help me out? Itunes is updated to the latest version and i have tried restoring in a computer with Windows XP and Windows 7.
 
okay thanks but im new to this what is DFU Mode and how do i do that?
 
okay when i hold both buttons down for 10 seconds and release before the apple logo appears is the screen supposed to remain black, because mine is going from the apple logo to the plug into itunes logo?

Well.. now when the phone restored i attempted to restore from a backup and now it is back in recovery mode.
