After updating to iOS 5 I've noticed a consistent problem with the iPhone 4 camera. Even when focus is right on the money, the camera pumps once through the full focus range for every shot.

This adds about 3 seconds to the time between shots and before the first shot (you can take a photo during the focus pump but obviously it's not going to be in focus). I don't know what I'm supposed to do during that time, maybe "get coffee".

During video recording the focus works as well as it used to aside from the first "pump".

Having the same issue on my new iPhone 4S. I'm upgrading from an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.3.3 which did not have this issue.

Good thing i found your post since right now i'm trying to figure out if this is a hardware issue with the iPhone 4S or a software bug in iOS 5. Sounds like the latter.

Hoping more people come forward so we can isolate this issue and have apple do something about it.

I have the same issue and was also wondering if its hard- or software related. Doesn't seem to affect too many people though... Which also means we can't rule out hardware.

I am on an iPhone 4.

This behavior rendered most of the photos I have recently taken useless, in contrast to 80-90% of the pictures being perfect before.

Ive noticed this as well with my iPhone 4s. I haven't, however, had any delays tho...it will focus, then I can snap a pic and keep snapping and it will stay focused, but if I stop it will keep refocusing unless I tap an area on the screen.

You mean a replacement phone? How would you order a new camera??

I ordered a new camera from Here when it arrives I'll fit it and let you know if its fixed anything. I't works out just a tiny bit cheaper to get a new camera as aposed to a new phone :D

So i went to the 5th ave apple store in nyc and found this issue is consistent with every iphone 4 and 4s that i could get my hands on.

Definitely an iOS 5 issue.

Someone please start a thread on apple support forums.

I just tried on my 4S. The only time it went through the focus cycle was when I moved the phone in between shots.

I took a bunch of photos today with my Iphone 4 with the IOS 5 update. More than half of them turned out like junk and aren't even salvagable in Photoshop.

With IOS4 I rarely had any bad photos. With IOS5 It's now the norm and a good photo is rare.

So my camera is capable of taking a good photo, but apparently IOS 5 getting in the way. Do you think shooting with the Camera+ app it would be any better?
