I've been trying to restore my iPhone 4 with a custom ipsw to 5.0.1 because I want the untethered jailbreak and unlock.
I initially got error 3194, then I edited the host file and added the line 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com to fix it.
Then I re-ran everything and it gave me Error 1600.

Heres some phone info:
Version: 4.3.5
Firmware: 04.10.01
Currently Tethered Jailbreak and unlocked via Gevey ultra

Things I've Tried:
iReb r5 to put into pwned dfu mode
redsn0w_win_0.9.10b5c to put into pwned dfu mode
2 different cables
2 different computers
All of the USB ports
iTunes, run as administrator

All of those ^^^ return the 1600 Error in iTunes.

Computer specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium
i3 processor
64-bit

If anyone can shed some light on my situation and how I can get past that damn error, I'd be so happy :D
Thanks

The custom ipsw is NO_BB_iPhone3,1_5.0.1_9A405_Restore
I need to preserve my BB and update to 5.0.1.
Would stitching it get me past my error and preserve my baseband?
Also, I don't know how to do that.

Ok I stitched the blobs to the custom ipsw, not the original ipsw.
Then I ran redsn0w as admin and went into pwned dfu mode.
Then ran iTunes as admin and shift+restored to the stitched custom ipsw and got Error 21. :(

After error 21 it throws it into recovery mode (not an issue but may be relevent somehow?)

I just did this today with my iPhone 4.

Here is what I did:
1. Stitch blobs to original 5.0.1 firmware under extras->shsh blobs
2. Preserver baseband using my stitched firmware file under extras->custom ipsw
3. Enter pwned dfu mode
4. Options + restore to the stitched AND preserved baseband firmware.

Did you have success with this?

I am working on the same problem... The order of steps I used was:
1. use Redsn0w to create custom firmware with preserved baseband 5.0.1
2. stitch blobs (5.0.1) to custom firmware via redsn0w -> create stitched custom firmware file
3. enter pwned DFU mode via redsn0w
4. option + restore in iTunes
5. results in Error 21 / stuck in recovery mode

It looks like I did the steps in a slightly different order than you. Also I checked and I have no entries in the host file regarding gs.apple.com

wow that worked, or at least it is working now.

What I was doing before was,
Making a custom ipsw then stitching blobs

Your way of stitching blobs THEN making the custom ipsw worked!

Wow, thank you so much! This method worked for me too. Stitching the "original" fw FIRST, then taking it into custom firmware. pwned dfu mode, done. Holy crap, I was going through this all yesterday. Thanks so much guys!!

I am trying this exact procedure with my iPhone 4 to upgrade from 4.3.3 to 5.0.1 while preserving baseband.

1. Stitch the blobs to original 5.0.1 firmware
2. When I attempt to preserve BB to my stitched firmware file I get the following error from redsn0w.

"Custom IPSW creation failed, General error"

Anyone have any idea of what is going on?

Sounds like a prob with redsnow.
If you're using win 7 run in compatibility mode under windows xp and run as admin.
Or try creating the custom firmware on another computer.

Hi, i have the same problem. If i do preserve baseband steps and then stitch shshs itunes throws error 21. And if i try to do stitch + preserve baseband , redsnow throws General error. Im using Redsnow 0.9.12b2 and trying to update from 4.3.5 to 5.1.1. Could you fix your issue?

Thanks in advance

error 21 means your are not in DFU mode during restore in itunes.

Also make sure your host file is set to apple instead of cydia, use TinyUmbrella for that, connect phone, open TU, go to advanced and UNcheck set host to cydia, close TU.

This method did not work for me because of the "general error" on redsn0w, it might be just for Macs, and I tried in two PCs (win xp and win 7).

Nonetheless, I used de sn0wbreeze method, and it restored ios 5.1.1 without updating the baseband (in win 7, I did not try on win xp). That is:

-I also increased the part ions size to 2024 instead of 1024
-DFU, itunes shift restore.. Viola!!

I really don't know why i couldn't get it to work on mac using . I even tried to restore on the pc before, but i was using the firmware created by redsnow. I still got the 1600 error. But when using the custome firmware created by snowbreeze, worked like a dream!! Now my phone is restored to FW5.0.1 BB1.59 and signal is back !

Thank you all for your help
