Hi guys

I've got a iphone 4 on ios 5.1 and every time i try and switch to the front facing camera the phone just crashes and I'm unable to switch back to the rear facing camera until i do a full reset.

There are loads of threads out there from people complaining about the problem but they are all old and know solution was found.

Is this a know fault now and is it just a case of replacing the camera?

Thanks ;)

You tried restoring and setting up as new?

Thanks for the reply ;)

That's the only way i can get the rear camera working again otherwise it just gets stuck on a blank screen.

But as soon as i switch back the the front camera I'm back to square one :(

could be hardware. you could always buy a new camera for cheap from ifixit and replace it yourself. i was having a hardware issue with an iphone 4 rear camera and had to replace due to it getting a stuck shutter when activated. new camera fixed it.

That was my plan but i thought it would be worth checking on here to see if it was a known bug first as it looks like a pain to replace.

I've read that sometimes the connection can come loose and needs reseating.

Can this be done by just taking off the back cover ?

Yes, remove back cover, Top left corner. Use a plastic pry tool to release from logic board. Becareful, though, some versions of the iphone 4 has a tab that fits under the flex cable for the screen. No need to remove those. Lift up on the camera and pull toward the left. When purchasing the new camera, make sure that you get one for the type that you have and get some tools that come with (if necessary) most do not have the torx screwdriver for the bottom screws.

Not sure if 2.5 years later the poster even has the phone anymore.
