Hi guys,
since yesterday i am googeling the web for an answer and next to irritating posts and scams on the internet i couldnt find the right clue.

its an iphone 4 with currently iOS 5.0.1 and Baseband 04.11.08. its locked to the austrian phonecompany "3".

so i want to sim unlock my iphone. it doesnt matter to me if it stays on 5.0.1 or if i have to upgrade it but thats the question.

what should i do to achieve it?

i saw that there is a new absinthe and a new ultrasn0w. but what are the right steps? should i upgrade my phone and hope for another baseband or should i preserve the baseband and use a customfirmware?

thanks for your answers and help,
cheers,
peacer

You can remain on 5.01 with your current BB and use a Gevey SIM interposer to unlock, jailbreak with redsn0w.

You can upgrade to 5.1.1 while preserving current BB and again use a Gevey SIM interposer, jailbreak with absinthe 2.04.

Try to get an IMEI unlock through "3" or a third party.

Ultrasn0w only works on the 1.59.00 BB so that is not a solution.

A Gevey sim interposer cannot unlock baseband 4.11.xx or 4.12.xx

Highest baseband it can unlock is 4.10.xx

To threadstarter: There is no hardware or software unlock for your baseband.
You cannot downgrade the baseband in an iPhone4
Pursue a carrier IMEI unlock (or an IMEI unlock from a grey market dealer - with caution)

Oops indeed, thanks dhlizard

Or you can just pay these guys http://www.officialiphoneunlock.co.uk/ 90$ and get an official factory unlock like i did today. Im tired of this software crap. Pay it once and its unlocked for good. Factory method.

They are located in UK but do AT&T unlocks and pretty much covers the globe with all carriers with iphones. Worth every freaken penny if you ask me. I bought the stupid grevey SIM and it works like ****. Constantly messing up my text messages and phone calls while i was overseas. This is legit and factory.

Happy customer here!

hey folks,
thanks for all the answers. ok then there is no chance via software and no chance via hardware and the only way to unlock it is through the IMEI factory unlock. the problem is my carrier wants 390€ for that and the austrian "3" is not listed in the IMEI unlocking pages which i could find! :S

so i am stuck, and cant use my phone in the country which i am goin to move to.... this is ****.

thanks for your replies and support.
cheers,

Yes the site really works. You can look at the many testimonials they have on their website. My device was unlocked within 1 day. The website shows the status and an email is sent to you letting you know that the unlock has been complete. Once you get the email, all you gotta do is just plug your device into itunes and await for the unlock message. This is factory unlock also :D

Does anybody know how these unlocking sites by IMEI do the unlock? I'm not attempting to do it my self, I'm just curious about it. :)

Hi,
First you can upgrade your mobile and then you can unlock your mobile.because if you upgrade after unlocked your mobile, your mobile will again locked to your network provider. So you can unlock after upgrading your mobile.I don't have Experience with absinthe and ultrasn0w,but I unlocked my Apple iPhone 3gs which is locked to o2 network using remote unlocking in the site Wickedunlock.com.you can unlock your mobile with latest Baseband and firmware.they are cheap and reliable. So I recommend you to view this site for more Details......

Once the IMEI unlock is applied, upgrading the firmware or baseband does not remove the unlock.

You can purchase an IMEI unlock code from eBay for about $20. Service time takes 12-24 hours depending on the load, but as more people find out about them, the wait time will increase. I'm worried that Apple will change AT&T's unlocking methods, but it's nice to know that the price has come down to almost the level of the Gevey SIM.

AT&T's unlocking method is the exact same as every other iPhone carrier in the entire world.
Also, Apple does not care a hoot about whether an iPhone is locked or unlocked.
Only the carriers demand phones be locked to preserve the carrier's customer base and revenue flow.
