Iphone 4 - Notification Sounds but No Notification

Hello...i recently updated to ios5 and everything is working great except for a small thing that is driving a bit crazy (mostly at night while i sleep).

For some reason my iphone every once in a while will ring/vibrate like i have a new notification but when i check the phone there is nothing. I keep searching for something that perhaps is notifying yet badges and notifications are off but i can't find anything.

Has anybody else encountered this issue?

i am using iphone 4s and this issue has created an argument with my partner.

i hate this unknown cause of so-called notification

This has happened to me in the past and each time it turns out that an email got to my device and was very quickly marked as read for some odd reason.
