I have an iphone 4s bought a few years ago from ebay used thats unlocked. The reason i bought it used was because i wanted a 4s and the condition was excellent. They didn't have it new and i didn't want any bigger phones.

My iphone 4s has a ton of issues and i will need to get a new iphone. First off, i updated the ios few times and that could have caused it. But the battery went bad. Battery would go out at 18 percent or even 40 percent etc. so i went to a repair shop and they installed a new battery. Well even after they did that, the battery drained very fast. The other thing was the battery could not hit 100 percent anymore. When it did hit 100 percent, the battery would drain so fast where it goes to 50 percent in 30 minutes max etc. So with this new battery, it still went out fast. Besides that, my iphone has issues connecting to a laptop. I read its a connector issue where you connect usb to it. Well i went to a phone repair shop and my first issue was of course that... but my battery went bad. They put in a new battery and also repaired the dock? The first time i got battery replaced it was 30 or 35 dollars. This time, i think it was 20 or 25 for the dock and 20 for the new battery. I went to those small phone shops so i believe the battery isn't real? Thus i would need to get a real battery from apple? But do most people do that? I did read getting the battery from ebay with the do it yourself kit thats what most people do. But did those batteries my iphone was replaced with, could they be worst than the ebay ones? I never did a iphone reset but should i try this instead? I didn't do this earlier because i didn't want to erase everything on my iphone. The other issue is this iphone lags so much. For most people, this would be unbearable and for me, its as close as you can get.

I need to get a new iphone and it has to be unlocked since i use it outside the usa. From looking at the iphones, is the iphone se probably the best choice? I do like the small iphone 4s size and never had a big phone and i saw iphone 5 or 6 is bigger. And i want to stick with apple. So based on this, should i just order the iphone SE? Also how much does it cost total with tax? Also, why is the 64gb and the 16gb price difference so little? Even if someone doesn't use phone much, isn't 64gb almost mandatory? I don't mind spending a good amount on a phone and i hear the iphone 7 came out. but im not that type of person where i need the most updated gadgets as thats not what i am. Thus if my iphone 4s still worked like when i first got, i would not even consider getting a new iphone as it suits me fine. But from battery issues... it goes out very fast now and charges only up to 90 percent then quickly drains... to the lagging, i cannot use this phone anymore. I think even if i did a reset and got a new genuine battery, i still get a new iphone.

So what should i do here with my iphone 4s. Should i just not even use it anymore and just buy a new iphone first? Should i backup my files on it and then do a clean reset and maybe that might solve issues? Should i do that and whether or not it solve the new issues, get a new iphone 4s battery anyway? Thus i know some people have 2 phones in case of a backup. And if getting a new battery, how should i do this? I feel foolish getting a geniune battery from apple because this is way overpriced. The other issue is there are so much lagging issues where i already spent money getting new battery twice and both battery seem to have problems. But the dock issue fixed was pretty important.

Can someone offer me recommendations on what i should do here? Such as step by step? Even if i get my iphone 4s fixed such as battery issue being normal and no lagging, i don't know when the iphone will go bad again. I had this phone for 2.5 years already. When i first got it, it was great.

You may not have gotten genuine batteries since it sounds like they didn't have great performance, or possibly there are other issues with the phone. I don't think it is worth the money trying to repair your 4s again considering the performance issues and since it is no longer supported with security updates by Apple (iOS 9.3.5 is the end of the road for the 4s and unfortunately performance isn't great with it on the 4s). Since you seem to prefer a smaller size I'd go with an SE, the adjustment from 3.5" to 4" is pretty easy and the phone is thinner and lighter as well. The SE has very good performance and battery life and should last you for several years. I don't know how much storage you need for what you use it for but since the premium for a 64 GB is now half of what it used to be I would definitely recommend going with 64 GB and then you have it if you need it down the road. You can get it unlocked from the Apple Store and it will work in other countries as well. Sorry I don't know what it will cost you where you're at though (I'm up in Canada and I don't what taxes are where you're at), but you can look it up on the Apple website.

hi thanks for the response. Well the thing is i will get a new iphone no matter what. But should i do a reset of my iphone 4s to see if that fixes any issue on the iphone? The thing is that obviously doesn't cost anything. And of course i don't mind getting new batteries but this time legit ones and then have that as a backup in case? How much does a genuine battery cost? Would buying the battery from ebay with the do it yourself kit be a good idea since that probably is a better battery than the places where i got mine? I feel like those batteries i got are worst than the ebay one that is do it yourself.

Hey, yes there is certainly no harm in doing a backup using iTunes and then resetting your 4s. Also, you can order a replacement do it yourself battery kit from ifixit.com that I've heard are pretty good.

hi there. If i do backup to itunes, it backs everything up correct?

If i order the replacement kit from ebay, could i bring it to a repair shop and have them do it? The reason is because the battery they put on my iphone probably is a very bad quality one compared to the ebay one. I dont mind paying the same price etc... Or would that seem a bit strange?

Yes, if you do a backup you can restore it to either the same iPhone or a different iPhone (as long as it is running the same or newer version of iOS). All your settings, photos, messages, etc. will be transferred.

I'd be leery of buying a battery from ebay as some may be good but you could also get a cheap one from China that would also be of poor quality. Yes, I think it would probably be strange to ask a repair shop to install a 3rd party battery, but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask!

Hi. Do you suggest i reset it first. Then order a new battery? Is there a chance that resetting it might fix the battery issue?

hi there last question. If i do the backup on icloud, it saves everything on my iphone? Basically every single thing? Just want to make sure before i do this.
[doublepost=1474999593][/doublepost]I cant log into my icloud as i dont remember answer to my 2 security question. It ask if send sms to phone or to my ipod. The phone number shown the last few digits isn't active anymore. I clicked send to ipod but where does that even go?

Or should i create a new icloud or should i just create a new apple account? Or can i not do that?

When you unlock your iPod, something should pop up alerting you of the security code. If you don't see anything, you may want to try contacting Apple's customer support.

You could create a new iCloud/Apple account, but you would lose access to any apps and media you've purchased on your older account, and I don't think you'll be able to restore your backup. I may be wrong about the restore though.

hi there. There is nothing that shows up. Also when it says ipod, could it be another device that i registered apple with? I think i registered my apple id with my another old apple device. Surely that could not be the issue?

I never bought any apps ever on my iphone. All the apps i have are free from the app store. Does this matter or not?

Is there another way to restore the backup then? I want to make sure of this before i press the restore iphone. Thanks.

Hmmm, I actually never use the iCloud backup so I don't actually know. When backing up my device to transfer to a new device I use iTunes (on my Macbook, but it also works on a PC with iTunes installed) and that backs up everything so it can be transferred to a new device (or restored on the same device).

Im going to purchase the iphone SE very soon online. It comes in 2 days apparently from what i see online.

Okay i have itunes on my desktop. So just back it up here and thats fine right?

And can you tell me how do i do this on itunes. Im going to do it now. Thanks.

It's pretty simple. Just connect your iPhone to the computer with the USB cable and open iTunes. You should see an iPhone icon near the top left corner. Just click on that which should bring you to a screen with info about your iPhone. There is a button that says back up now on that screen. Just click it and wait for it to finish.

When you get your new iPhone plug it in to the PC and open iTunes and a screen to setup your new iPhone will come up. One of the options will be to setup from a backup or something like that.

I backed up to my computer. I only have around 9gb or storage used and it seemed pretty quick. However, where is the backup located?

Is it the apple folder? And which one is it? Also is it normal for the backup take very quick? I only had 9gb used.

If you're using Windows, I think the backup is located is located somewhere like C:\Users\[your Windows account name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

But that shouldn't matter if you're trying to restore from backup on your new SE. You can take care of all that within iTunes when you first connect the SE to iTunes.

If you restored and all your data is there on the phone, then you're all good.

yes im using windows. But how do i find this easier? I went to start search and just typed in roaming.. not there. Well i did a backup to my itunes/computer and it was very quick...less than 10gb. But i dont now where it is.
[doublepost=1475186002][/doublepost]The thing is i want to do this. Reset my iphone 4s. Then see if doing this would fix my lag/battery issue. Then whether or not it fixes the issue, then backup everything back into my iphone 4s. Does that make sense?

I will be transferring the backup with the iphone SE as well but i want to see if i could fix the iphone 4s so i have a backup phone that has fewer issues if that makes sense.

I honestly don't know where it's saved... Never really cared. You won't need to find it in order to restore the backup to your new phone, it's just a matter of connecting it to the same computer and setting up your new phone from a backup. iTunes knows where it is...

Yes, the backups are pretty quick and it's normal for the file to not be as large since it doesn't need to keep a copy of iOS or full copies of Apps in the backups, just your data (photos, messages, documents, settings, save data etc.)
[doublepost=1475198905][/doublepost]If there is an Apple Store nearby you could make an appointment at the genius bar and they can walk you through the steps. Unfortunately sometimes it hard to explain to someone what to do over a forum.
