Hello.
I feel stupid writing this as I really dont know what to do. Im good with iDevices. Anyway im doing my friend a favour. She mentioned her iPhone 4S wouldnt turn on or be recognised in iTunes.
Ive been trying for ages and nothing. Ive asked her and found out she had it Jailbroken.
Nothing happens with the phone when not connected (Total black screen). No matter how long I hold down the sleep/reset button.
So, Ive put the phone into DFU mode and reconnected it to iTunes. It recognises it as being in recovery mode so I restore. It downloads the software but then comes up with the error saying iPhone not recognised.

Please guys. Im stuck. im usually really stubborn to admit I dont know something but im annoyed with myself with not knowing what to do next.

PS. Shes not bothered about losing stuff on the phone.

It isn't bricked because it is still seen by iTunes. It does sound like a hardware problem. There's a very good chance that iPhone is still under warranty , take it to an Apple Store to have it replaced.

It actually says
"This device isnt eligible for the requested build".
What does this mean?

You're trying to restore an iOS version other than iOS 6 to it or you have gs.apple.com in your hosts file. Use Google to check your hosts file and remove the lines. Restart your computer when the lines have been removed.

I dont know want any of that means!

Google "remove cydia from hosts file". Follow the steps for your computer's operating system.

It'd be easier to tell you to restore it on another computer than to explain blobs.

This is another computer. This is the second computer we're trying it on. Im currently trying it on my own laptop which has never had this phone attached to it before.

You can only do an iOS 6.0 restore on a 4S. Cannot go down to any version of iOS5. If you were doing it for 6.0 make sure iTunes is pointing to apple.

Does your friend have any friends with more knowledge about jailbreaking and trouble shooting. I think clearly she gave it the wrong friend. I think the heart is in the right place but sometimes it's better to admit defeat. ;)

Hey FYI if you're trying to install iOS 6.0 you must have the latest version of iTunes which is 10.7. If you are using an older version you can't update to 6.0. Just throwing this out there in case you're using an old version of iTunes. There is no reason you can't update her 4S to 6.0 unless the phone has a hardware problem.

As the previous poster has mentioned.
First update iTunes to the latest version 10.7.
Then put the iPhone into dfu mode and restore to ios6.
Should be good to go unless there is a hardware problem.

No luck AT ALL!!!

Updates:
The phone was on 5.1.1. She went to update software to 6.0 and phone stopped. Obviously.
Yesterday it would show the Connect to iTunes logo on the screen when I plug it into my Macbook (I tried different USB ports)
Today on the PC it does not show this. The Apple startup logo shows for about 20 seconds, then vanishes back to black, then shows the logo again..... repeat... repeat.
Tiny Umbrella does not recognise the phone at all. Bare in mind TinyUmbrella has never been used before.
iTunes barely recongises it, and when I tried to manually restore via iTunes to 5.1.1 (Which I have manually downloaded), it says
"The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3194)"

I tried just restoring it to iOS6.0 on iTunes10.7 but nothing. I downgraded to iTunes10.6.3 to manually update to 5.1.1 but nothing.

Im ready to smash this piece of **** up now!!!!

I'm sure that will make your friend really happy. Friends love their phones being smashed up. ;) But I know how it feels.

Are you sure you put it in DFU mode correctly? If logos are coming up it is NOT in DFU mode.

Just sell it for a few backs and spare yourself the headache. We need iTunes error outputs if you want any help when you try to restore to iOS 6. You should probably leave it on the wall charger for an error before trying this method. You might need to swap the battery out if it isn't holding a charge though.

take my advice this device is beyond you.. Just tell her to ask somebody else. Of course you do risk she gives it to another guy he becomes the hero. then they become a item but that's life. At least she will be able to call and text him. really you are better of to admit defeat.

You clearly are not reading any posts in this thread. Admit defeat, give the phone back to your friend and tell her to take it to Apple.
